Throwback Thursday: Let’s go back to that old covered bridge, the oldest bridge in the US still in use! Bitzer’s Mill Covered bridge spans the Conestoga River on Cat’s Back Road in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I visited here in 2017 on a day trip with my kind couchsurfing host who showed me all around Amish country! Built in 1846, Wikipedia says it’s the oldest bridge in use, while google maps images show it being closed and under construction. I looked into why and discovered that a 13ft+ high tractor trailer attempted to squeeze through here in 2023, obviously getting quite stuck and causing extensive damage. Driver didn’t see the sign. 🙄
This isn’t the first time this bridge has needed repairs due to vehicular negligence. Reminds me of the Talbot St. bridge in my city which is always eating large vehicles. 🚚
Despite needing repairs on the regular, this bridge has survived nearly 180 years of service due to its exceptional construction and effective Burr Truss design. Built with basic tools and phenomenal craftsmanship it stands the test of time, but maybe not the wrath of bad drivers!
