TW: Police brutality targeting Black and Indigenous Land Defenders
My new piece with Jerome Turner for Teen Vogue is up.
“[An officer] put their thumb behind my jawbone in my throat and pushed so hard that no air could escape. I was trying to scream ‘I can't breathe’ but no noise was coming out…. I thought I was going to die,” she recalls to Teen Vogue. Lemongrass says she was put in handcuffs, although most other arrestees were not, and her ankles were zip-tied. Once out of sight of the larger group, she says, an officer told her, “Your friends can’t hear your screams anymore. They've already forgotten about you.” She says she told the officer, “Your friends might forget about you, but mine won't forget about me.”
Black and Indigenous land defenders at Fairy Creek are sharing their stories.
