Saturna, specifically East Point, has called to me for many years. I’ve been to every Southern Gulf Island that has a ferry route except for this one! I finally got to visit this past weekend and spent 75% of my time at East Point hoping for whales to come and enjoying the scenery and wildlife in an absolute happy daze. What a magical spot!

A first week of September mushroom round up- and boy is it a good one! Lobster mushrooms and chicken of the woods are popping off. I couldn’t get over this incredible flush of Chicken of the Woods exploding out of a conifer snag. I took many, many photos of it! The lobster mushrooms we’ve been finding this year are so vibrant and more reddish orange than I’ve ever seen them. Fir cone mushrooms are abundant, lots of dyer’s polypore starting to sprout, coral mushrooms are emerging, and Russulas abound! A solid and VIBRANT start to my favourite time of year. 🍄

When I started volunteering with Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program I immediately knew the program was special. I’ve always been passionate about owls (duh!) and conservation, so I knew giving my time to the program would be worthwhile. I wasn’t expecting the entire team to consist of some of the most incredible humans I’ve ever met. The dedication, passion, kindness, and inspiring leadership amongst the people at this program sealed the deal for me. Within weeks of starting, I sat down the program coordinator and asked what I needed to do to work there. I was concerned my B.Ed wasn’t the right degree (why oh why didn’t I realize my love for biology sooner!) but turns out the perfect role was waiting for me all along. When I was offered the role of Program Educator, I immediately burst into happy tears. I still have to pinch myself to be reminded that this is real life. I get to share about these amazing owls for MY JOB. What an absolute dream.

What does this mean? Well, don’t worry, I’m still a photographer! I might be taking on slightly less photography work, but my role is a part time position, so there is still plenty of time to fuel my other passion of photography.

It also means that I can bring Small Eyes the Owl to classrooms throughout the Lower Mainland for educational, curriculum-linked, presentations! If you’re a teacher, club leader, or kids program that may be interested in having me come and share these owls and the amazing work the breeding centre does, there is a link in my bio to inquire!

Whenever I show photos of myself with these beautiful owls to my friends, they immediately point out the absolute sparkle of joy in my eyes. It is the greatest honour and joy to work with these owls and the people at Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program. I cannot wait for what is ahead! If little Rachel could see me now, she would squeal with joy. My gratitude is endless.

Though the majority of our rivers will fill with salmon later in the fall, some have started to welcome the early go-getters. Chinook salmon tend to start their spawn earlier than others. When they leave the ocean and enter the fresh water of the Fraser, they turn into these beautiful, vibrant creatures. I will always be filled with awe while watching the salmon run. I have so much gratitude for the determination of these fish! They feed our ecosystems in intricate and beautiful ways.

Noah Kahan has achieved so much in the last three years and been a class act while doing it. I will always always always come back to watch him play again and again.

Some late summer fungi finds. The stunning reishi in picture 2 was of course in a non-harvestable area but it sure was pretty!

I’ve always been a sucker for texture in my work, which really makes my love of mushrooms make sense. The textures are so varied and fascinating!
