The fascinating Muskoxen!
In Inuktitut language "the bearded one", in the Cree language "Ugly moose" or "ugly bison"
Did you know that despite their resemblance to bison, the fascinating muskox is actually a member of the goat family?
Muskoxen are currently in their rut. Males develop a musky scent to attract females, which is how they got their name. These resilient survivors evolved in Asia millions of years ago and roamed the earth alongside woolly mammoths for over 600,000 years. Approximately 90,000 years ago, they migrated from Eurasia into North America via the Bering Land Bridge.
Back in 1967, 14 muskox were captured on the Labrador Peninsula and brought to small farm in Kuujjuaq, northern Quebec ( the start of my tour). The population on the farm grew to 54 and were then released due to politics. In the 80's, the numbers in Nunavik increased by 25% bringing the population to approximately 300. Today, there is approx. 7000 living in the Nunavik region.
The females cows have an eight to nine month gestation period and calve around April to June. If a winter is to severe, she won't go into estrus until the following year or the year after. When she does calve, she will normally have one.

Another successful expedition is in the books! I’m confident that my group captured all the incredible shots they were hoping for. Yesterday, our final full day, kept us on our toes with stormy weather that eventually gave way to beautiful, clear skies. The float plane is currently on its way to pick us up, so I’ll be back in touch with everyone soon.

Our time at Wolf Lake camp in Nunavik has been fantastic. The weather was pleasant until today, when we woke up to sideways rain. Luckily, it's beginning to clear, and there's a good chance we’ll see an Aurora tonight. I'm excited to share more about the trip in the upcoming week or so.

Good morning and Happy Friday! The countdown to unforgettable adventures begins! For me, summer's last hurrah fades, and a new chapter unfolds... or should I say, new chapters? My fall season officially starts next week, bear-fishing season has already started, and the moose and elk ruts are arriving very soon. Next week, I embark on a thrilling journey to Nunavik, Quebec's Arctic gem, leading a group of photography enthusiasts. This group is getting ready for a symphony of fall colors and northern lights (weather permitting), plus the opportunity to witness the Ice Age-surviving muskox thriving in their natural habitat. I'm looking forward to sharing all my fall adventures, now that my summer break has come to an end. Have a great day and weekend ahead.
