Baby loon on the mother's back
When any baby bird hatches, it can't regulate its body temperature at first. It takes several days for baby loons to be able to stay warm on their own. For several days, they swim only for short periods and then climb back up on their parent's back. Their thick down feathers keep their skin dry.

To capture this images , I had to hide in a floating blind in a cold water for 3 hours, but I think my patience paid off at the end.

Great Grey Owl
Canada
This is probably one of my best owl in flight portraits I captured in the last 5 years.
When you spend time with animals in general , you will realize that they have a distinct personality. This one indeed has a lot of attitude.
I heard from a good friend that some first nations believe these birds are made of half magic and half mystery, “They can disappear into a forest like they were made of smoke and I totally see this very evident
When we look at the scientific latin name “strix nebulosi” , we will realize that Strix, the genus name, comes in the mythology of classical antiquity, a bird of ill omen . It also referred to witches and related malevolent folkloric beings. The species name nebulosa comes from the latin meaning misty, foggy or ambiguous. So in short: half magic, half mystery.
Story behind the photo:
I spotted this bird perching on an old tree stump when I was walking in the woods, from about 40-50 feet distance, I sat down, hoping to get a flight shot. To my luck, the owl started to glide towards me at a slow speed, nearly hovering before plunging onto a little rodent. I was fortunate to snap some images and this one turned out to be the best.
I hope you enjoy it.

Black Tern
Alberta -Canada
A small, graceful marsh tern, black and silver in breeding plumage. Vulnerable to loss of marsh habitat, its numbers have decreased in many areas during recent decades.

Conservation statusNorth American population has declined sharply since the 1960s. Loss of nesting habitat owing to drainage of wetlands is one likely cause. Runoff of farm chemicals into nesting marshes may affect hatching success. Loss of food supply on the wintering grounds, owing to local overfishing, may also be a factor.

Eastern Kingbird
Tyrannus tyrannus
With dark gray upperparts and a neat white tip to the tail, the Eastern Kingbird looks like it’s wearing a business suit. And this big-headed, broad-shouldered bird does mean business—just watch one harassing crows, Red-tailed Hawks, Great Blue Herons, and other birds that pass over its territory. Eastern Kingbirds often perch on wires in open areas and either sally out for flying insects or flutter slowly over the tops of grasses. They spend summers in South Alberta prairies where they eat fruits and small insects.

Downy Woodpecker
Dryobates pubescens
Tiny ,widespread and familiar woodland resident and backyard visitor. Its black-and-white plumage is nearly identical to larger Hairy Woodpecker, but note short bill (shorter than the head) and black markings on white outer tail feathers. Readily visits feeders, especially for suet. Nests in cavities.

Humpback Whale

I was privileged to witness this breaching of a playful humpback whale at the Labrador sea (Northeast coast of Newfoundland- Canada).
Humpbacks are among the biggest whales in the world. They are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it, landing with a tremendous splash. Scientists aren't sure if this breaching behavior serves some purpose, such as cleaning pests from the whale's skin, or whether whales simply do it for fun.
