Behind the scenes on the lost railway to Phoenix, BC… πŸš‚

While exploring the old Great Northern Railway / VV&E line near Phoenix, BC, we hiked into the forest to find the remnants of Bridge 66, also known as the Glenside Trestle.

This impressive railway trestle once spanned the canyon below, carrying trains to and from Phoenix, hauling ore from the mines and transporting the people who lived and worked in this remote mountain community.

Today, the railway is long gone, but the remains of the trestle still stand as a ghostly reminder of the railway that once connected Phoenix to the outside world.

These are a few behind-the-scenes photos from our adventure as we explored this forgotten section of the GNR/VV&E railway.

It’s amazing to think that trains once crossed this canyon, carrying passengers and tons of ore from the booming mining town of Phoenix. Today, nature is slowly reclaiming what’s left behind.

A little piece of BC railway history hiding in the woods.

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ Boundary Country Adventure! One of our favorite stops along the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is the historic Granby Tunnel, nestled on the flanks of Thimble Mountain east of Grand Forks.

Long before recreational trail users enjoyed this route, the Columbia & Western Railway carried ore from the booming mining communities of Phoenix and Eholt. At its peak, more than 15 million tons of ore moved through this corridor, hauled by powerful Shay locomotives working the steep grades between the mines and local smelters.

Today, the tunnel marks a dramatic transition. Emerging from the cool, forested north side, riders are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Granby River Valley below. The descent from Thimble Mountain offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the trail.

πŸ“Έ Photo 1: The historic Granby Tunnel, a reminder of the railway's important role in Boundary Country's mining history.

πŸ“Έ Photo 2: Suzanne enjoying the ride as she descends Thimble Mountain, with sweeping views of the beautiful Granby Valley below.

πŸ“Έ Photo 3: A welcome stop at the Section Man's Shed rest area. A special thank you to Don Backmeyer group
for building and installing the new picnic tableβ€”it's a fantastic addition for trail users along the route.

πŸ“Έ Photo 4: Grand Forks, Suzanne takes a stroll along a preserved section of Columbia & Western Railway track beside the historic Grand Forks C&W train station (now a pub), reflecting on the rich railway heritage that helped shape the region.

History, scenery, community spirit, and adventure all rolled into one unforgettable ride!

A quick stop in historic Greenwood, BC to say hello to the museum folks while planning some upcoming KVR Boundary Country Rail Trail adventures!

Pictured is Greenwood's historic City Hall building, which also housed the Courthouse upstairs. Many notable trials from the mining boom era took place within these walls, while the old jail cells still remain in the basement below.

It's always fascinating to step back in time and imagine the stories this building could tell. If you're exploring the Boundary Country, Greenwood Museum & Visitor Centre is definitely worth a visit!
