Why Your Ceremony Might Look Empty in Photos (Even When It’s Not)
your ceremony might feel full of love, but if your guests are scattered like it’s a middle school dance, it’s gonna look a little sad in your photos.
Here’s how to avoid that.
1. Don’t go wild with extra chairs
Unless a planner tells you otherwise, try not to have more than 5 to 10 empty seats over your guest count. I’ve seen beautiful ceremonies feel empty just because too many seats were set “just in case.”
2. Focus on the money rows
As a photographer, I notice the first 2 to 3 rows and the first two columns of seats into the aisle immediately. If those areas are empty or half-full, it shows in every wide shot.
3. Reserve seats with intention
Know exactly who those front row spots are for and label them clearly.
Also, we’re past the “bride’s side vs. groom’s side” era. Let people sit where they want, but guide them to fill in the front first.
4. If you’re a guest reading this, don’t hang back
Unless there’s a literal sign telling you not to, sit close to the front and toward the aisle. Especially if you’re on time. You’re not in the way - you’re adding life to the photos.
Your ceremony doesn’t need to be packed to look good.
But thoughtful seating makes a world of difference.
Your future self (and your photographer) will thank you.
