Ruby & her people. 🖤

I first met Carly when we collaborated on a Halloween shoot together, and I’ve loved getting to know her ever since. She’s wildly talented, incredibly creative, and just one of those people who makes making beautiful things feel effortless.

Her partner is pretty lovely too… but Ruby?
Ruby is my absolute favourite. 🥹

There’s so much more to dance photography than asking a dancer to pose.

Technique matters more than you think.

The pointed foot, the turnout, the alignment, the lines- these details are a huge part of what a dancer has spent years working toward.

And just as importantly, safety matters.

Not every impressive pose you see on Pinterest is appropriate for every dancer. A dancer’s strength, flexibility, training, experience and individual body all need to be considered.

Safety always comes before art.

That’s why I believe collaboration with dance teachers and choreographers can be so valuable. They know their dancers, their training and their capabilities, and working together helps us create images that showcase the dancer beautifully while keeping them safe.

I grew up dancing, and after 10 years of photographing dancers, I’ve learned that the best dance images aren’t necessarily the biggest or most impressive poses.

They’re the ones where technique, movement, the dancer AND the photography all come together.

Because you can’t edit good technique into a photograph.

And sometimes, spending just a little extra time tweaking those tiny details is what takes an image from “meh” to “WOW.” 🤍

She asked me to frolic in a field with her.

Obviously, I said YES. 🌾

We wandered, we laughed, we chased the light- and together, we created a little bit of magic on both film and digi.

I think some of the best photographs happen when we stop trying so hard to make a photograph and simply let ourselves be present in the moment. ✨

Where are my 90’s witches at? 🙋‍♀️

Practical Magic came out in 1998, at a time in my life when I felt like I didn’t really belong.

I was living in the small town of Prince Rupert, and that movie ignited something in me. I realized I had never really identified with the princesses in the movies and shows I watched growing up. But a witch? A whole family of witchy women? That felt like something I understood. Something about it resonated deeply with me, and it became one of those comfort movies I could return to again and again.

I was so excited to share it with my kids when they were old enough, and now both of them have grown up with Practical Magic too.

I also read all of Alice Hoffman books as an adult- most of them over and over- and they’ll never leave my shelves.

So when a dance mom sent me the flash Kate created in honour of the new Practical Magic movie coming to theatres, Paige and I jumped at the opportunity.

We loved the cozy little studio in the trailer, and getting to talk with Kate and get to know her made the whole experience even more special.

I don’t always get tattoos because they have a deep meaning. Sometimes I just see something I love and want it on my body.

But this one does mean something.

It feels like a little piece of a story that found me when I needed it, stayed with me through different versions of myself, and somehow became something I got to share with my kids.

How cool is it that the good memories from our own childhoods can live on..not just in our memories, but in the little traditions, stories, movies, songs and magic we get to pass down to our own kids.

And now I get to carry a little bit of it with me on my body forever. 🔮🌿✨

What does it mean to be an artist?

It means we notice things.

The way the light hits someone’s face.

The way a hand finds another hand without thinking.

The little moments happening in between the ones everyone else is watching.

The way a person moves.
The way they love.
The things that might seem ordinary, but somehow feel like everything.

Being an artist means seeing beauty where other people might not stop to look.

And then finding a way to make someone else see it, too.

That’s what photography is to me. ✨

I met these lovely humans in the Comox Valley this summer while they were here on vacation, and we planned a July beach session.

Mom had dreamed of sundresses on the beach, a carefree midsummer evening, and lots of time to simply play together. 🌊☀️

The weather, however, had other plans. 😂

The wind was absolutely WILD and it was definitely not warm.

“Go to Vancouver Island,” they said. “It will be beautiful and warm,” they said. 🤣

So we ditched the beach and met at their adorable little Airbnb instead.

And honestly? I think it turned out pretty perfectly.

Because while a sunny beach is beautiful, the most important part of any family session is being together. And this little family, along with their beloved grandpa, demonstrated that beautifully.

They played, cuddled, laughed, and made memories at the little home they were staying in- and it gave us some pretty sweet little backdrops along the way.

The beach didn’t happen.

But a summer evening they’ll remember did. 🤍
