Grateful to see the conservation work at Elk Island National Park helping bison thrive again.

I have to admit I didn’t expect pelicans in Saskatchewan—but I probably should have known they migrate here.

American White Pelicans breed on prairie lakes each summer. Their numbers were once heavily reduced in the early 1900s due to hunting and pesticides, but they’ve since recovered and are now listed as Least Concern.

A familiar sight on the landscape that never gets old: bison grazing 🩬
An adult bison can eat around 9–14 kg of grasses and plants every day, helping maintain healthy ecosystems as they roam.

Many thanks to Stan from for a great tour. There are so many things I would have missed and stories I would not have heard. I realize I only saw a fraction of it, but a Saskatchewan is definitely worth exploring.

Day 9 was back to looking for wildlife. The day was off to a frustrating start. Eventually, the bison showed up. These are a combination of bison from Saskatchewan and Alberta. They are in the process of molting which gives them a quite ragged look.

A couple of photos from earlier in the week. There is always something happening in the prairie dog colony, from a tender moment to a serious looking discussion at the summit.

Day 7 was a slow photo day. It’s an opportunity to share some photos of one of my checklist animals for this adventure. I only had two sessions in which to spend some time with these owls. They coexist well when the prairie dogs as they don’t dig their own homes, but rather take over abandoned ones.

Day 6 was a travel day with not to many photo opportunities. I did however come across this abandoned building that was a school house from 1910 to 1957.

Day 5 was a down day. A chance to catch up on some of the many photos I took. Here are a few pictures that fit into the category of unexpected encounters. This badger was taking a break from doing a serious excavation job on a prairie dog den. I’m pretty sure its intentions weren’t the noblest.

Day 4 highlight: The turkey vulture is not the prettiest of birds, but impressive nonetheless. As you can see in the second photo, this one is working in keeping the backroads of Saskatchewan clean.
