For my Final Critique: Campaign Assignment at OCAD University, I produced an educational documentary showcasing the candid story of Michelle Bilek alongside her advocacy work with the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. Michelle provides profound insight that urges viewers to move past harmful stereotypes and see homelessness as an issue of denied rights, not individual failings. She explains proven solutions like Housing First that can end this crisis with proper societal will.
Homelessness exemplifies one of society's greatest systemic inequities. As an artist and university student, I recognized I possessed tools to counteract dominant narratives normalizing this injustice. Through vivid films humanizing overlooked voices, creatives have the power to spark the empathy needed to drive reform.
This project highlights the immense complexities of homelessness while delivering an ultimately hopeful call to action - both grassroots and political. As youth, when equipped with media skills and a cause, we can reshape debates on issues like homelessness. So I invite you to watch Voices Unheard: https://youtu.be/8Y7clPhhso8?feature=shared
I also encourage supporting the vital work of organizations on the front lines of addressing homelessness in our communities. They provide critical services and advocacy to vulnerable groups and rely on donations from allies like you. Please consider getting involved with groups like:
Regeneration Outreach Community
The Salvation Army
Knights Table
Our Place Peel
ARMAGH
St. Leonard's Place Peel
EFry Hope and Help for Women
211 Ontario
Through compassion and understanding, citizens and leaders can ensure all people have a place to call home.
