On Saturday, June 20, 2026, members of the advocacy group Animal Justice held a demonstration outside the Sobeys located at 22 Fort York Blvd in Toronto.
The protest was organized to advocate for higher animal welfare standards, specifically urging Sobeys to transition exclusively to selling free-range eggs. Participants expressed significant concerns regarding the conditions of chickens within industrial farming systems.
The location was strategically chosen due to its high visibility along the route to Toronto’s World Cup stadium on a busy game day.
While the majority of the demonstration remained civil, the event also saw counter-protest activity, with some individuals purchasing eggs and cooked chicken outside the storefront to express their opposing viewpoint. As protests go, there’s always a few bad eggs.
