Here’s my perfectly imperfect little family for !
Lindsay, the tiny satin hen is probably our friendliest chicken, in that she will tolerate being picked up, held and petted in exchange for sunflower seeds. She is an amazing, protective mom 🐣, but sometimes goes a little crazy, attacking the much bigger Cochin hens if they come near her chicks. I suspect the behaviour started in response to Maebe, who likes to abandons her eggs before they are ready to hatch and then tries to steal chicks from the others who have done all the work.
Delgado is a very naughty chihuahua. He will be 15 next week. Age and senility have only made him crankier, but we love him anyway 🦈. He’s the last of the original 4 pets that moved to NB with us from Toronto 8 years ago. So weird to think that he has now lived more of his life here than in Ontario! At this point, our lives pretty much revolve around his constant demands for food and closeness. He doesn’t necessarily want us to touch him, but he always wants to be touching us in some way.
Shazam! is our formerly feral “barn buddy” who spends probably 85% of his time indoors, sleeping on pillows these days. He loves all the other pets and just wants a friend, but previous cat experiences have taught everyone they are not to be trusted as a species, so his overtures are mostly shunned by dogs and chickens, alike.
Iris is our special little hairless but “never nude” dog, who acts more like a cat. She is sweet, funny, and neurotic. She loves to dance 💃🏻 and uses her front paws like hands, with surprising dexterity.
And finally, Judy is one of our original 4 Cochin chicks from 2020, and is our only rooster at the moment. He his a gentleman with the hens, and has never shown any aggression towards us. He’s huge, but super calm and we can just walk up to him and pick him up, any time. I wouldn’t say he “likes” it, but he doesn’t mind. He takes good care of the hens, showing them food he finds and letting them eat before him. He wasn’t actually intended to be in this portrait, but he insisted, and was the most cooperative subject.
