Jah Grey

Jah Grey Toronto visual artist/photographer, Jah Grey. By offering a perspective through my heArt, I am working to challenge normative ideas.

I shoot portraits of people in the community, generally in black and white, and explore themes of gender, sexuality and self-expression. My photography encourages people to become more open minded and more appreciative of our simple freedoms, even within our struggles, and to see the similarities that lie even within our vulnerabilities. The message in my art is about redefining the social norms o

f gender, race, queerness and rebelling against the constructs others place on our bodies and our identities. Having the strength and vulnerability to challenge normative ideas is central to my photography. I feel we often let society control and dictate who we are, where we belong and who we need to be and forget to carve out new spaces in ourselves for change, growth and evolution.

This is the last week to see my CONTACT exhibition (), with BAND (), Putting Ourselves Together!

This exhibition pays tribute to figures like Fola Francis, a vanguard for transgender and non-binary rights in Nigeria, whose legacy of activism and courage inspires beyond her tragic passing in December 2023.

My work evidences the growing acceptance of the LGBTQ2S+ community as they strive to be as free within the spaces they carve out for themselves as they would in the public domain, despite Nigerias’s stringent anti-LGBTQ laws, such as the same-sex marriage (prohibition) bill, which not only bans same-sex marriage, but also criminalizes same-sex relationships and LGBTQ2S+ organization.

Join me at BAND to learn more about practice and this series from the Uncommon Beauty docu-series I was honoured to be apart of in Lagos, Nigeria!

Friday, May 24th at 6PM - 7PM

In 2022, I had the privledge to be commissioned for over a month to work in Lagos, Nigeria, for the docu-series “Uncommon Beauty,” shedding light on the lives of Transwomen, drag queens, and non-binary individuals.

As a Black Q***r Autistic man of Trans experience, I am honoured to have contributed to this movement for freedom and change. However, documenting the lives of marginalized communities in Nigeria was not without its risks. It was a sobering yet courageous experience to capture the narratives of those enduring discrimination, criminalization, and the looming threat of violence, prompting many to seek refuge elsewhere for authenticity and freedom.

Among the individuals I documented, Fola Francis’s story stands out. Fola, the groundbreaking Nigerian model of transgender experience, made waves by gracing the Lagos Fashion Week runway for Cute-Saint and Fruché. Despite Fola’s activism and advocate status for Trans and non-binary issues after the cross-dressing bill was introduced in Nigeria, Lagos Fashion Week decided not to post any of her photos. The untimely passing of Fola Francis on December 20, 2023, left the community grief-stricken, underscoring the urgency to amplify her legacy through our documentary and imagery, previously only exhibited in Lagos and featured in Dazed magazine.

Excitingly, I am thrilled to announce my upcoming solo exhibition, “Putting Ourselves Together,” on March 28, 2024, in collaboration with BAND and supported by Scotiabank!

With that being said,

The Black Daddies Club () is teaming up with Jah Grey (), the founder and director of Black Men's Therapy Fund for an incredible video installation that will capture the captivating stories of Black men over the age of 40, encouraging men to reclaim the best part of themselves, while also addressing the most common concerns that Black men face when it comes to love. This project will explore the challenges and barriers that Black men often encounter in the pursuit of love, shedding light on these issues to create a transformative conversation.

Always asking me what I do.. I document black men. You also ask me why, and I respond “it’s important” — this is important. We are important and exist even after we are no longer physically here. Took me a while to see, I believe that black men deserve to be captured for the sake of beauty and for the sake of slowly dismantling the image of toxicity we’ve been fed for too long. We deserve support and care because I truly believe we are worth that investment. I had so few positive role models growing up and I’ve always wished blackness, as a positive attribute, was celebrated more. The fear and shame of vulnerability (being hurt, asking for help or wanting to cry) makes us hide and I believe we should recommit to having larger conversations–emotional sharing with each other because it’s an important piece of healthy black masculinity, in hope that someday, not only will the outside world see black men in their full light, we’ll be able to see the light within ourselves.

Inspiration post

Creating safe spaces for folks in your life to be open and honest about their feelings and opinions I feel is so important for healthy dynamics.
Although I feel that life is really too short to care deeply into what others think or feel about you, I do believe that there are ways to honour yourself while listening to the opinions and feelings of others even when we do not agree. I feel like a few things that I’m currently working on is listening with an open mind, and trying to put myself in their shoes, understanding diversity and recognizing that there’s so much to gain from listening to others, as well as, sharing your opinions and feelings. Not only does it allow the person to know that their feelings and opinions are values, it might actually open your eyes to another perspective we might have not come to on our own.
