An empty GPS ballast train has an SD30-SD60-SD40 combo all with matching paint schemes for power as they make their way westward on the Cranbrook Sub about to pass through the line’s namesake town enroute to the Swansea ballast pit for a reload.

Just as the sun sets, CN L55131 02 has a pair of GP9RMs for power as they pull out of the glass lead and onto the south track at Milbase, passing under the classic searchlight cantilever enroute to work a couple customers before heading back to Aldershot. I didn’t think I’d be posting this image as quickly as I am, but CN crews worked fast and this shot now has a new aluminum cantilever sitting right behind the old steel one effectively ruining the frame. Sad to see more relics like these continue to be phased out.

In late November 2024, some lake-effect streamers off the Georgian Bay left the muskokas buried in about 4-5ft of fresh snow, and set the scene perfectly for the Holiday Train as it made its way north, seen here passing the water tower in Bala in the mid-afternoon.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

CN M302 from Winnipeg has an SD75i in the lead as they run down the last couple miles of the Dundas Sub in full dynamic brakes climbing down the infamous Niagara Escarpment. An additional challenge for this crew was having a 10mph restriction between mile 5 and mile 2, which I can’t imagine was an easy task to accomplish with a train of mostly loads behind them on this steady decline.

CP A19-30 has a matched pair of Beaver II SD40-2’s as it heads through Canal Flats, BC in the late afternoon on the last day of September. Above sits one of the most gorgeous double rainbows I’ve ever seen in my life, which in person was a full arch for both but limitations with it’s placement only allowed for me to catch about 25% of it with the train here in this photo. Regardless, myself and the 5 others in this spot were pretty much in awe as the train passed, unable to properly process what we were witnessing.

My commentary when Isaac and I got back in the car was that this was definitely gonna be the best shot of the trip, and we were only on day 2/8. It ended up being true but it was still an amazing trip for the remaining 6 days.
