Maybe 2023 is going to better for me for aurora photography. We moved to the Foothills of Alberta 2.5 years ago and every time we get an aurora storm, it was cloudy here or the lights of Calgary created too much light pollution. Well Thursday night was amazing even though it started out sketchy and I had my share of issues throughout the night. As the KP index climbed above KP5 and was predicted to hit KP7, I figured I better get out incase something developed. Like always, I looked up and we were clouded over. It was clear north of Calgary and east of Calgary but I didn't really feel like driving that direction. The cloud apps showed a large opening in the clouds west of Longview around Highwood House. Time to put some miles on. The cloud opening was gone by the time I got there but decided to take a couple photos anyways. The first photo is from that location (first photo) and although the area was clouded over, the aurora was actually making the clouds glow green. I managed to get a few photos before I hear a logging truck coming fast. The dust was unreal and there was no wind so it wasn't clearing. I had no cell coverage and the dust wasn't disappearing so I figured I might as well head back to town. As I got closer to town it was obvious the clouds around Diamond Valley were gone and there were green pillars from east to north and west. I put on a pile of km's stopping at several different locations including The Stampede Ranch, the old Bar N Ranch, Hartell homestead, my house and several spots along backroads south and west of Diamond Valley. Along the way, I managed to knock my tripod over into the mud in the ditch and my remote shutter stopped working. I still got lots of photos but decided I better head home. I got home and the lights were still out and were amazing right from my backyard. May as well setup in the lane behind our house. Slipped on the ice while carrying my tripod and camera and landed right on the tripod and broke one of the supports. I managed to make it still work and got some great shots of the lights over the hill behind us and our house. Ended up going to bed around 4:00am but watched from my bedroom window until around 5:00am. The Aurora intensity is supposed to increase so hopefully I get a few more chances this year.
