I watched most of Team Canada’s first FIFA game on Commercial Drive, Vancouver’s Little Italy.
Cruising along The Drive on foot, passing by every single restaurant with TVs blasting the game or TVs facing the street so passerby’s could stop and watch the moment, reminded me of making my way around Milan on game days when I lived in Italy during my 20s.
There was always that question in my head as I neared a metro. Will there be fans on the subway? Will there be singing and cheering? Will I get crushed in the celebrations? Fortunately, Vancouver has not reached that point in fandom yet and it was all fun and joyous . Italians cheering on Team Canada, along with Canadians,and all the other cultures that had gathered to cheer.
There were however, an excessive amount of bored police walking up and down the street making their presence known.
Now that FIFA is here, I wonder if we will start to actually notice that there is a really huge event in our city. So far, apart from the Drive, I haven’t felt any celebration. I guess I will await the expected arrival of 300 000 people here for Italian Day on Sunday.
