My attempt to photograph last night’s lunar eclipse was foiled by thick cloud cover, so here’s a look back to last year’s (March 14 2025) lunar eclipse, when I photographed crows in front of the “blood moon” near my home city of Vancouver. Lunar eclipses occur when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, casting sunset-like orange and red light onto the moon’s surface.

This past summer, I was incredibly fortunate to have a family of Barred Owls nesting just a short walk from my doorstep. I was watching this fledgling perched high in a tree, when it suddenly flew down and landed on an eye-level perch right in front of where I was standing. The late evening light perfectly hit the bird’s face, making it stand out against a dark and shadowy backdrop. Although it looks studio-like, I captured this image with natural light as it gave me a brief glance over its shoulder!

Eagles are highly opportunistic when it comes to finding food. While they are often thought of as energetic predators, they spend much of their time scavenging on easier prey, such as spawned-out salmon carcasses, washed up carcasses on the beach, or even food scraps at landfills . So, opportunities to see them exhibiting their maneuverability and speed to catch their prey are particularly special! One such place where this happens is Vancouver Island, where eagles gather in the late spring and summer to feed on hake (a fish in the cod family) brought to the surface by strong tidal currents. Here’s a few closeups of the eagles in action!

This event is the subject of my annual Bald Eagle and Coastal Wildlife photo workshops! Of the three trips I’m doing this year, just one last spot remains for week 3 (July 14-19 2026)- the other two trips are already sold out. Send me a message or let me know in a comment if you’d like more information on joining me to photograph this amazing spectacle!

The Andean Cock-of-the-rock has got to be one of the most unique looking (and sounding) birds in the world. The males of this species gather at special places in the rainforest known as “leks”, where they put on courtship displays, hoping to attract a mate. Watching these remarkable birds perform their display is always a highlight of my annual bird photography workshop in Ecuador, and provides a good opportunity to work on photography in a challenging environment. Leks are frequently located in the dark forest understory, where low-light photography techniques are required to photograph them. It can also be a visually “busy” environment, where paying close attention to background and foreground elements is important to create a pleasing image.

While I mostly see Northern Hawk Owls in the winter, I occasionally encounter them in the summer season too, especially up in the Yukon. During one of my Haines Triangle Birding Tours last year, we had a memorable encounter with this beautiful bird, perching at the tips of trees as it hunted in the daylight! Due to a cancellation, one spot has opened up for the upcoming May 27 - June 1 2026 Haines Triangle trip (June 3-8 remains sold out). Send me a message or let me know in a comment below if you are interested, and I’ll send you the trip information! This is a small group tour, limited to just 5 participants.

Wishing everyone a happy holiday season!

Each Fall, Black Bears on the coast of British Columbia gather at rivers and streams to feast on spawning salmon. It’s a highly important food source for them, and so much other wildlife. The bears are often picky eaters, focusing on the fattiest parts of the fish: the roe, brain, and skin. However, nothing goes to waste- the scraps are eaten by scavengers and detritivores, and the nutrients spread throughout the surrounding forest, fertilizing the trees and shrubs and fuelling the growth of the habitat surrounding the rivers.

For this image, I used a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/13th of second to give the surrounding water a smooth motion blur effect! Using this technique made the image more interesting, but required hundreds of attempts to get an image with the bear sharp.

Great Blue Herons fish both by day, and by night! On busy beaches, I’ve often noticed herons becoming even more active at night, when there is less human activity. With this observation in mind, I spent several nights photographing on beaches on the west coast of Mexico, trying to capture a unique perspective on familiar wading birds. I photographed this heron as the lights from the city of Puerto Vallarta glowed in the distance, using a slow shutter speed of 0.6 seconds to capture details in the low light environment.

The seasons are changing, and with the colder temperatures, owls are beginning to arrive to their wintering territories! Here's a few Great Grey Owl photos from my annual "Owls of Alberta" photo workshops. Sunrise (and sunset) make for some spectacular photography conditions! It's also when many owl species are most actively hunting. These owl tours are with a small group, and have a focus on ethical wildlife photography. We use extensive pre-trip scouting and patience to observe natural behaviors (no baiting/calling owls).

The 2026 trips (taking place in February and early March) are sold out, but I'll be announcing the 2027 dates soon! Send me a message (or let me know in a comment below) if you want to be added to the "wishlist" to be the first to be notified when the next trips are open for booking.

Vancouver Island is home to some of British Columbia’s last remaining giant trees. Most of its ancient forests have been logged; what’s left are small, isolated patches of old growth, surrounded by younger second-growth forests that lack the rich biodiversity and complexity of the original ecosystem. Clearcuts scar the landscape, with centuries-old giants reduced to stumps. However, in one of these clearcuts stands a remarkable survivor: Big Lonely Doug. Towering at 230 feet tall with a 39-foot circumference, Doug is the second-largest Douglas Fir in Canada, and is estimated to be over 1000 years old. With the surrounding old growth forest gone, Big Lonely Doug is a powerful reminder of what we've lost, and what we still have left to protect.

Standing beneath this ancient tree is a humbling experience, something words and photos struggle to convey. But I wanted to try. I chose to capture Big Lonely Doug against the vast canvas of the night sky. The light from many of these stars has traveled for hundreds or even thousands of years to reach Earth. Remarkably, Big Lonely Doug has been standing here since before much of that starlight even began its journey to our planet.

Just five minutes after I reached Big Lonely Doug’s base, clouds rolled in. Fortunately, I had those 5 minutes of clear skies to capture this image!
