A couple of paintings competed during Patreon sessions I held on my page this weekend. The full video for the chickadee is available for members at the Dabbler tier or higher. It is also available for a one time purchase of $15 if monthly is not your thing. The video includes the line drawing, image of the finished painting and a complete list of materials used. Today’s livestream explored one of the core building blocks of abstract painting: Shape, Line & Composition. Instead of focusing on objects or details, we looked at how a painting can be built from simple shapes, directional lines, and thoughtful placement on the page.

In the demo I walk through the process from quick thumbnail ideas to a finished abstract study, showing how a few well-placed shapes can guide the eye and create movement across the painting. It’s a great exercise if you’re looking to strengthen your abstract compositions or loosen up your approach to watercolour.

If you’d like to watch the full recording, it’s now available on Patreon for members at the Dabbler tier and above. That tier includes access to the growing library of demo recordings so you can revisit lessons anytime.

New month on Patreon.

In March we’re diving into watercolour abstracts 🎨, hosting the monthly Inquirer Workshop 💬, and finishing the month with a livestream where I’ll paint an American Kestrel step-by-step.

If you enjoy learning new techniques, painting along live, and being part of a small, engaged art community, Patreon is where I share the deeper teaching side of what I do.

Access to livestreams, workshops, and recordings varies by membership tier, so you can join at the level that works best for you.

If you’ve been thinking about joining, this is a great month to jump in. Link in bio.

Great white pelican / 15x11’ / watercolour

How do you paint luminous whites without losing the light? 🤍
In this Great White Pelican demo, I focus on subtle shadow, water control, and keeping those highlights glowing without overworking the paper.

The full step-by-step tutorial is now live on Patreon — link in bio.
