Just minutes from downtown Nanaimo, Protection Island feels like stepping into a slower pace of life. This small island is reached by a short passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo Harbour and is known for its quiet beaches, gravel roads, forest trails, and relaxed community vibe.
Fun fact: there are no paved roads on the island, and many locals get around by golf cart or wheelbarrow! It’s also home to the famous Dinghy Dock Pub — Canada’s only floating pub. A full walk around the island is about 4–5 km with beautiful ocean views almost the entire way.
