The District’s historical significance is profound, given its long history as a primary port in Newfoundland and Labrador. Harbour Grace was likely a major harbour for European fishers from the mid-1500s and became a colony in 1617.

Throughout the 18th century, Harbour Grace was a crucial center for the Conception Bay fishery and a major port of entry for supplies. In the 1760s, the town began to develop its institutions, and its first church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, a Gothic Revival structure, was constructed in 1764, making it the oldest stone church in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Collect your sketchbooks, paints, and a spirit eager for adventure! Spend seven days exploring the wild, windswept shores and hidden inlets of Newfoundland and Labrador’s famous coastline with landscape painter Dominik Modlinski and photographer Pete Ryan.

As the title indicates, the focus will be Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Newfoundland’s western coast.

The plein-air retreat is open to artists of all skill levels. Each day offers a chance to stroll, observe carefully, and respond to the ever-changing land and sea. Under Dominik’s guidance, participants will learn to see past the obvious, capturing the spirit and mystery of the landscape while gaining confidence and developing their vision for future creative experiences. When you return home, you will have a portfolio of artwork, a new way of seeing, and inspiration that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Photos by Pete Ryan 🇮🇪🇨🇦 | When we think of the Yukon, we often relate it to Dawson City and the Klondike Gold Rush. Like the California Gold Rush, you might think many people live here. Not so. While the Yukon covers about 190,000 mi.², it has a sparse population of around 40,000. This offers a unique opportunity for exploration and discovering new mines and possibly future ghost towns.

Travelling solo, I was not alone. After meeting a local Royal Canadian Mounted Police corporal a few days earlier, I had a survival expert to travel with to these mines. With no access roads, we had to improvise. I saw some of the most spectacular sites, only to be outdone by centuries-old ruined monasteries in the Tibetan Himalayas. Both the Tibetan and Yukon exploration images are archived in the National Geographic Image Collection.

Photos 1–3: An conveyor at the Venus Silver Mine (established 1908), a former high-grade underground gold mine located in southern Yukon. The site also contains known reserves of lead, zinc, and cadmium.

Photos 4–6: A rudimentary stone structure, likely having served as an assay office.

Photos 7-9: Atop Montana Mountain, tram tower, ore car tracks.

Photos 10–15: At lower elevations, images include caribou, a historic trestle, views of the summit of Montana Mountain, and Tagish Lake.
