Before we began the birch bark biting at Lake Katherine, I shared my relationship with the storms and the thunder beings. As we started to bite into the bark, it began to rain lightly. When I unfolded my piece, I saw a Thunderbird come to life in the bark. I love guiding people on these walks; the connections I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned through them are invaluable. This is what it means to build relationships through story and art.

You might come across this bajiishkaogaan/tipi when visiting Lake Katherine in Riding Mountain National Park. This structure is part of Giiwe and will be used in tourism programming for the coming seasons. The proper channels were followed and Giiwe does hold a license to have a bajiishkaogaan in this specific area. Asema (to***co) was also offered before the planning started. While this is a business location, it is importantly a place of learning, teaching and art.

I did initially plan for this to be raised sooner, but mother nature had other plans. The bajiishkaogaan will have the canvas cover on weekends when the other tourism programming launches. I hope that this will grow to where experiences can be offered on a more regular basis, but all good things take time.

I would like to thank all those involved in the process and for their support in making this a reality. I look forward to bringing more to people in the coming seasons.

If there are any questions, feel free to direct them to Aaron McKay at [email protected].

Thank you.
