This Great Blue Heron flew across the river and landed right beside me recently. I watched as it fished it's way past me and around the flooded grasses alongside the Saugeen River and it's loyal steelhead fishermen. I'm pleased to say I was at the right place at the right time!

Did you know that Great Blue Heron's have a third eye lid - or nicitating membrane? According to audubon.org, the nictitating membrane is largely transparent, and it helps keep the eye moist and clean while guarding it from wind, dust, and hazards.

There were several of these beautiful birds in the Old Ausable River during our paddle at the Pinery Provincial Park a few weeks ago. I decided to add one more of my favorite shots.
