Access to healthcare is collapsing in alarming silence across South Kivu. Following the suspension of World Bank funding through the Multisectoral Nutrition and Health Project (PMNS), more than 500 health facilities are now facing severe shortages of medicines, vaccines, and nutritional supplies.

In a province already devastated by armed conflict, pregnant women, newborns, and children are paying the highest price.

In Minova, some women remain trapped in hospitals because they cannot afford life-saving C-sections after medical fees were reintroduced. Others are forced to give birth at home despite serious health risks. Meanwhile, the few free healthcare facilities still operating, such as the Numbi hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders, are already overwhelmed far beyond their capacity.

The crisis comes as South Kivu continues to face chronic insecurity, mass displacement, measles and cholera outbreaks, and rising levels of malnutrition.

According to Doctors Without Borders, maternity consultations at Minova General Hospital dropped by nearly 34% between January and February 2026, a direct consequence of the return of healthcare fees.

Behind these numbers are lives quietly pushed closer to catastrophe every single day.

SKATERS IN GOMA

EVERY Sunday, more than 50 skaters
gather at Goma’s Kin Market, across
from the town hall, to roller-skate on
some of the few tarred roads in the city
in the east of the Democratic Republic of
the Congo. They share the roads with the
citys’ many motorcycle taxis, chukudus
and charcoal lorries. The Goma Roller
Club has existed for more than a
decade, navigating conflict and Mount
Nyiragongo, Goma’s active volcano. The
skaters in the club are almost evenly
split between juniors and seniors. Some
aspire to play the sport professionally.
But even for hobbyists, the training
sessions are a respite from the violence
and uncertainty that pervades the air in
the city.

THE ORPHANAGE ON FIRE

In a bit of a heartbreaking turn of events, the Light of Life Children’s Home in Bunia DR Congo was consumed by fire this morning. Bunia has always been a challenging place for ministry due to the insecurity of war. Most are unaware of the war that has been happening in Eastern DRC for the past 20 years. This war has resulted in around 5 million people dying, and it is the reason why we chose to build the Light of Life orphanage in January 2023. Since it launched, it has quickly grown to nearly 80 children—all of which came out of some of the most horrific situations.

While we still do not know the cause of the fire, it started this morning while the children were at school and quickly consumed the whole building. In a season of thankfulness, I am beyond thankful that no child or staff was harmed in the midst of the fire. Things are still a bit chaotic, but right now the first priority is to try to find a short-term shelter for the 80 children who call this place home. Beyond that, we are needing to rebuild what has been destroyed. With a concrete building, the walls and floors were not consumed. Outside of that, everything else was consumed.

When we launched the ministry, we all felt strongly that God had led us to John 1:5, which states, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” We built Light of Life in a spirit of boldness, and we will rebuild it with a greater resolve. Please be in prayer for the children and the staff there.

IN REMOTE EASTERN CONGO, A NEW MPOX VARIANT IS ATTACKING CHILDREN

An earlier strain was concentrated among adult men. Now the virus is moving quickly between children and in many cases it is proving fatal.LWIRO, Democratic Republic of Congo—The sound of children crying never lets up in this overcrowded village clinic. Grade-school boys and girls roam around barefoot, covered in bulbous sores. Sick infants lie beside their mothers in rooms that were designed for two people but now hold 14.

Lwiro, a small settlement in eastern Congo surrounded by banana and cassava fields, sits at the center of a spiraling epidemic caused by a new version of the Mpox virus—one that is disproportionately infecting, and sometimes killing, children.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public-health emergency of international concern, the second time in just over two years that an Mpox outbreak has received that designation. Public-health experts say the emergence of a new and still poorly understood strain of the virus stands as a warning: Nearly five years after Covid-19 was first detected, the world is struggling to contain pathogens that could potentially cause the next pandemic.

Cases of the new Mpox strain, known as Clade Ib, have been recorded in nine countries in recent months, with a small number detected as far afield as Thailand, Sweden and, a few days ago, Germany. Most of the infections are in Congo, which has recorded more than 30,000 suspected Mpox cases this year—more than twice as many as in all of 2023—and more than 1,000 deaths. Around 60% of the cases in Congo, and 80% of the deaths, have been among children, according to Unicef.

BOAT CAPSIZES ON A LAKE IN EASTERN CONGO, KILLING AT LEAST 50PEOPLE, WITNESSES SAY.

A boat carrying scores of passengers capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo on Thursday, killing at least 50 people, witnesses told The Associated Press.

It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were on board or how many perished but witnesses said they saw rescue services recover at least 50 bodies from the water. They said 10 people survived and were taken to the local hospital.

The boat, overloaded with passengers, sank while trying to dock just meters (yards) away from the port of Kituku, the witnesses said. It was going from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma, in North Kivu province.

Local authorities said that the rescue efforts continued and the death toll remained unknown for the moment.

“This boat was carrying about a hundred people when it had the capacity for about thirty passengers,” the governor of the province of South Kivu Jean-Jacques Purusi told a local radio station following the accident.

It was the latest deadly boat accident in the central African country, where overcrowding on vessels is often to blame. Last summer, an overloaded boat sank near the capital of Kinshasa and 80 passengers lost their lives.

Witnesses said the boat that capsized was visibly overcrowded.

“I was at the port of Kituku when I saw the boat arriving from Minova, full of passengers,” Francine Munyi told the AP. “It started to lose its balance and sank into the lake. Some people threw themselves into the water.”

“Many died, and few were saved,” she added. “I couldn’t help them because I don’t know how to swim.”

The victims’ families and Goma residents gathered at the port of Kituku, accusing authorities of negligence in the face of growing insecurity in the region.

Since the fighting between the armed forces and the M23 rebels made the road between the cities of Goma and Minova impassable, forcing the closure of the passage to trucks transporting food, many traders have resorted to maritime transport on Lake Kivu. It’s an alternative considered safer than road traffic, which is threatened by insecurity.

BEFORE HER DAUGHTER GOT SICK, WISOBA SAID , SHE WAS INFECTED HERSELF BUT DIDN’T KNOW IT.

Painful lesions emerged around her ge****ls, making walking difficult. She thought she had a common sexually transmitted infection and sought medicine at a pharmacy. Days later, she went to the hospital with her newborn and was diagnosed with mpox. She recovered, but her daughter developed lesions on her foot. Nearly a week later, Maombi died at the same hospital that treated her mother.

Wisoba said she didn’t know about mpox until she got it. She wants the government to invest more in teaching people protective measures. Local officials can’t reach areas more than a few miles outside Kamituga to track suspected cases or inform residents. They broadcast radio messages but say that doesn’t reach far enough.

A TRUCE IN CONGO ENDES IN WEEK. AID GROUP SAY IT COULD BE A LOST OPPORTUNITY TO HELP CIVILIANS

A two-week truce in eastern Congo has heavily reduced fighting, but with a week left aid workers and local civil society groups say not much help has reached millions of people who are trapped in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

The two-week humanitarian cease-fire was announced by the U.S. a week ago, bringing a pause to clashes between Congolese forces and rebels allegedly backed by neighboring Rwanda in the mineral-rich region. Fighting has intensified this year, especially in the North Kivu province where hundreds of thousands have been displaced.

The two-week period is not enough, and even during the truce there have been reports of continuing violence in Masisi territory near Goma, the capital of North Kivu, said Abdoulaye Barry, head of the sub-office of the U.N. refugee agency in the region.

“Even in accessible areas, the displaced suffer because resources are limited,” said Barry, adding that the agency has yet to deploy additional resources.

In the Bulengo displaced persons camp, one of the region’s largest, news of the truce brought joy that quickly faded when aid failed to arrive, said Faustin Mahoro, a refugee and head of the camp.

“We continue to suffer from the lack of humanitarian support,” said the 45-year-old father of eight. “We don’t see the benefit of a humanitarian truce if humanitarian aid does not reach us.”

USA WELCOMES HUMANITARIAN TRUCE IN CONGO WHITE HOUSE SAYS

The fighting in North Kivu province has sent more than 1.7 million people fleeing their homes, driving up the number displaced in Congo by multiple conflicts to a record 7.2 million, according to United Nations estimates. The United States welcomed a two-week humanitarian truce in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the White House said on Thursday, amid fierce fighting between government troops and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The fighting in North Kivu province has sent more than 1.7 million people fleeing their homes, driving up the number displaced in Congo by multiple conflicts to a record 7.2 million, according to United Nations estimates.

The truce, beginning at midnight local time on Friday and to extend through July 19, covers areas where the conflict most affects civilian populations, the White House said.

“The recent expansion of fighting in North Kivu has prevented humanitarian workers from reaching hundreds of thousands of IDPs in the area around Kanyabayonga and displaced more than 100,000 people from their homes,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

The governments of the DRC and Rwanda expressed support for the truce “to ease the suffering of vulnerable populations and set conditions for broader de-escalation of tensions in eastern DRC,” Watson said.

The United States calls on all parties to honor the truce, the statement said.

North Kivu has been battling the M23 insurgency for more than two years as well as other militia violence. Congo, the United Nations and Western powers have repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting M23 with its own troops and weapons, which it denies.

Rwanda accuses Congo of financing and fighting alongside a Hutu rebel group, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which has attacked Tutsis in both countries.

M23 says it is fighting to protect Tutsis from rivals like FDLR, whose ranks include Hutu extremists who fled to Congo after participating in the 1994 genocide targeting Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda.

DIVINE’S STORY

Divine Bareke Simusi, 40 years old, fled Rutshuru after it was taken by the M23 and is now pregnant by an unknown person, because she was r***d in the IDP camp and then she went to look for food in the fields,
“I don’t know if I’m pregnant by whom because I was r***d twice on the same day, one nightmarish morning I went to get something to eat for my children, arriving in the fields there weren’t too many people yet, I was almost alone, then after I saw two men with sticks in their hands and boots then one jumped on me it was like in a dream, after some time there was the shot the two men took I fled, it was the government soldiers who came to save me, I went home without telling anyone what happened, the next day, in the evening other men came to my little house, they had guns , they told my grandchildren not to scream because they will kill them, (crying) then they did this to me in front of my children...”
