Brigitte Lustenberger devotes her artistic practice to the intensive exploration of photography and is especially interested in the medium’s inherent connection to themes such as evanescence, memory, and the fragility of life. The artist’s work is also defined by her critical approach to the representation of the female body in photography and the concomitant questions of seeing and being seen (“the gaze”): “Is my view of my body even my own? How to overcome a gaze permeated by male ideas, desires, and fantasies of the female body along with genderized posing? Welcome to my solo show »A Gaze of One’s Own« Museum Franz Gertsch 🤗

You literally walk through my head to enter the exhibition.

In the works, I address the lack of visual references for female bodies like my own. What does it do to our perception of ourselves when certain bodies are barely represented?

The exhibition explores the space between seeing, being seen through a photograph, and how we see ourselves.

Interwoven with the body works, the fading flowers from »An Apparition of Memory« echo the same questions of transience, vulnerability, and what we choose to see.

«Threshold of Visibility» exists at the threshold between visibility and invisibility. A nearly transparent colour slide is made visible through the scanning process, gradually revealing the traces of a female body. The figure emerges as a fleeting presence. Something that simultaneously reveals itself to, and eludes, the viewer’s gaze

What becomes visible is the result of material, technical, and cultural conditions. Dust, subtle colour shifts, and scan artefacts are deliberately retained, underscoring that every photograph is a constructed image rather than a transparent record of reality.

At the heart of the work lies a fundamental question: Who or what decides what becomes visible? The female body exists even where it almost escapes the gaze. It is not the body that is invisible; rather, it is our visual traditions and learned ways of seeing that determine which bodies become visible and which remain at the margins of perception.

«Threshold of Visibility» is part of the series «A Gaze of One’s Own». Through images of her own ageing body, Lustenberger explores whether and how a woman can develop an independent gaze upon the female body, beyond centuries of male-dominated visual traditions and ways of seeing.

«Assemblage of Touch» consists of multiple layered photographs of arms and hands. Individual body fragments merge into a sculptural form that hovers between body and sculpture, between touch and dissolution. The body is not presented as an object of the gaze, but as a bearer of experience, relationship, and agency. Touch, gesture, and movement come to the foreground as universal forms of human communication.

The intertwined arms can be read both as support and as entanglement. They speak of intimacy and distance, of care and control, of community, as well as the search for one’s own place within a larger structure. The work deliberately remains open, inviting viewers to project their own experiences and memories onto this fragile web of relationships.

As part of the series «A Gaze of One’s Own» Lustenberger explores whether and how a woman can develop an independent gaze upon the female body, beyond centuries of male-dominated visual traditions and ways of seeing.

«The Thinker» is a personal interpretation of Rodin’s «Le Penseur» and engages with Jeff Wall’s photographic reinterpretation of the work. Lustenberger continues this art-historical lineage of images, placing herself, a n**e, middle-aged female body in the iconic pose – vulnerable, contemplative, and present. She takes a seat. She takes up space – space that bodies like hers have rarely been granted in the history of art.

What does it mean to reflect on oneself when there are so few images in which one can recognise oneself? The Thinker makes the absence of such visual references visible and invites viewers to question their own gaze. The non-reflective glass was deliberately not used, allowing viewers to see themselves reflected in the image. Looking at the figure thus becomes, at the same time, a way of looking at oneself.

The work is part of the series «A Gaze of One’s Own». Through images of her own body, Lustenberger explores whether and how a woman can develop an independent gaze upon the female body, beyond centuries of male-dominated visual traditions and ways of seeing.

«A Gaze of One’s Own» is currently on view in the solo exhibition of the same name at Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf.

Thank you, Regula Fuchs from Der Bund und BZ , for this wonderful interview. We had such a deep conversation about the representation of the female body in photography.
“For 200 years, it has primarily been men who took photographs and women who were photographed—often n**e. This has left its mark on all of us. For many female bodies, especially aging ones, we lack reference images. The same is true for many other people and body types. There are gaps in our collective perception. On top of that, the prevailing image of the female body remains very limited.”

My solo show A Gaze of One’s Own is open until August 30 Museum Franz Gertsch

Two of my series are brought together in this exhibition: A Gaze of One’s Own and An Apparition of Memory, both of which explore transience and vulnerability.
Through images of my own aging body, I ask whether and how, as a woman, I can develop an independent gaze upon the female body, beyond male-dominated visual traditions and ways of seeing. In doing so, I explore not only the transience of the body but also the ways in which its perception is shaped by society.
The images of withered flowers suggest a new language of photography: through a unique photographic process, they become fragile images of light whose tender beauty emerges precisely through their gradual fading and decay.
