I clearly stated a while ago that I would not be doing any more colour drawings. So here I am with a newly completed colour drawing. However, some scenes definitely don’t work in black and white and this one proves the point. A walk in the area between Bort and Grindelwald on a beautiful early summer’s day presented me with this flowered meadow towards the infamous Eiger and I was struck by how the colours seemed to sing with every hue.
Switzerland can often look like a chocolate box cover when painted but I’m pleased with the natural feel of this one, although I had to resist the temptation of adding a cow grazing in the centre.

The Alsace region on France is a beautiful area that just seems a little confused with itself. Is it French, German or Swiss? Are the little towns with winding cobbled streets between colourful timbered houses real or left overs from Disney theme parks? Either way, it’s very inspirational for a humble artist. This street is found in Éguisheim while the horse is not to be found at all.

Much more of a landscape with this one. I witnessed an amazing storm passing by the Neuschwanstein Castle during a holiday in Bavaria a couple of years ago and completed an ink drawing of it shortly after. However, I was going through a more stylised period at the time and on reflection, didn’t think it worked too well so I took a more dramatic and traditional rendition with this drawing.
Neuschwanstein is on the left with the Hohenschwangau (gotta love these names!) Castle in the distance, St Coloman’s baroque church lower right, Alpsee in the centre and Schwansee (Swan Lake) peeking through on the right. This is all best viewed with Wagner’s Götterdämmerung playing loudly in the background.

After my last detailed pen and pencil illustration set in the Netherlands, this next artwork is set in the Swiss Alps with memories of a steep summer evening walk surrounded by luminous snow-capped peaks glowing against the mountain sky, all inspired by European travel and the beauty of Switzerland’s landscapes. And that’s a marmot there, not a rat!

A pen and pencil drawing with a Dutch theme. For the past few years, I’ve been experimenting and pushing myself with different techniques, styles and mediums but I’m at an age now that I know what I like. European scenery, black and white, pen and pencil on paper. This is my comfort zone and I’ll stick to it for now.
I’m also not chasing after likes and follows. I can’t cope with the algorithm game. If I’m lost in obscurity then at least I’m back to where I began 😃
