I am still taking weddings during this time!

“When I consider how I want to grow as a person I think about how I want to be a more positive individual who exhibits a sliver of the empathy towards others that you do. I think about you and your endless optimism that you have for this world. You’ve shown me that people deserve the benefit of the doubt, to be forgiven, and the importance of being considerate of others without rushing to place judgement on others. Thank you for making me a kinder person and teaching me to see the beauty in all things in the world.”

And as he said the words to her, tears poured down her cheeks. Just a moment between the two of them as a light mist of rain started and neither of them were phased. Because all that matters was this moment. And for him, all that mattered was her.

Meet Kate + Connor. Kate’s a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Connor is a high school English teacher. And I am a puddle after yesterday’s wedding.

Fifteen years ago I was dressing up my college friend Ellen and posing her all over the Ponte Vecchio in Italy for a photography course I was taking there at the time. During all of our shoots, I remember imagining photographing a bride in Europe someday.

I returned to Italy eight years later, in 2016, and had opportunity to photograph Pete, another college friend, as he got engaged in Florence. I felt like I was getting closer to my dream of someday photographing a bride in this incredibly beautiful continent.

In 2017, I paused my More Good Road Trip for a moment to be able to photograph Pete’s wedding in Maine. In 2018, I reconnected with Ellen in Oregon. She hosted me in her home and I was able to take a few photos for her engagement. And then, on October 21, 2023, magic happened. I was flown to Europe to do what I had only dreamed about in 2008: photograph a bride in Europe.

So many tiny beautiful moments that have led me to this last one. So many happy sweet memories my camera has allowed me to be part of. Thank you for being the best models Ellen, Pete, and Brianna ✨

And Caroline, my gorgeous Swiss bride, thank you for making one of my photography dreams come true.🤍

They met in a park after work one day. And even though he accidentally gave her the wrong phone number, fate allowed them to find each other again. He brought two little sweet girls with him, and she opened her arms so big that it allowed room for all three of them into her heart. ✨

There is a moment at every wedding I shoot that becomes my favorite one. The photo I always want to share with you all first. But this wedding gave me two and it was impossible to choose. First, when Delaney walked down the dock towards Eugene for the first look. I had already staged myself for the shot and we were waiting for her to arrive and Eugene started to dance. His friends were watching from afar shouting out to him and cheering him on. She finally arrived and was tapping his shoulder, and he refused to turn around. I was laughing at the moment and suddenly, I realized what was happening. He was smiling so huge and clasping his hands together as if he had been waiting for this moment his entire life (because he had been) and he was basking in it for one more second before he turned around. She was tapping for a good 30 seconds before he turned to look at her. I felt myself getting goosebumps just watching it.

And then, when she walked down the aisle to Ruelle singing “ I Get To Love You.” And every single person watching had tears in their eyes. Including me.

So many happy tears.
So many good moments.
Such a damn good love story. Cheers to you two and all of the love you surround yourself with-thank you for reminding me how much I love this job. 🤍

And my favorite part was the very first few seconds during their first look. He grabbed her into an immediate hug and whispered, "I missed you so much today."

He had dropped her off at her hair appointment that same morning...

And because I was so close to them, I heard him say it. And I heard her say back, I missed you too. And I saw her tearing up. And I immediately teared up, too.

In 12 years of photographing weddings I’ve never experienced something as beautiful as last night…

My bride, Tara, tragically lost her first husband, Joe Tandy, in 2016. Her and Joe had met in high school, started dating in college, and deployed to Afghanistan together. They received a Veterans Day Wedding in 2013.

Four years after Joe died Tara returned overseas to serve, in Africa, where she met another Joe. Someone who accepted her history, would go with her to visit her late husband’s grave, and made Tara smile again.

He not only asked Tara’s father for permission when he wanted to ask Tara to marry him, he asked her first father-in-law, Jack Tandy, too.

Yesterday I photographed their wedding. And when it was time for the father-daughter dance, Jack Tandy brought her to the dance floor. And at the very end of the dance, while tears were pouring down my face behind the lens, he waved on Tara’s new husband to the floor and grabbed them all into a hug.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing I’ve witnessed to date in my photography career.

During the course of the last 490 days I reconnected with couples whose weddings I had photographed in the last decade. We met at the same location where we had taken their wedding photo and I put them back in the same exact pose. Only now their kids were added into the photo. Then we picked a night to hang out. I’d show up after the kids were in bed, and we would have a glass of wine sitting on their couch and chat. Sometimes it was just a cup of tea. Sometimes it was a margarita. Sometimes I drove to another state to do this. Sometimes I invited them into my own apartment. I spent hours with these couples and for most of the interview I would audio record them. We would talk about the biggest challenges they’ve faced since their wedding day and how they got through them. In the end, other than 10 seconds of one groom speaking in the beginning of the trailer for this project, I ended up not using any of it. It was their private story, and while they let me into it, I decided to keep it just between us. Instead, I gave you them, sitting on a couch. Most of them in their pajamas, with no make up, exhausted after their day. Because THAT is what marriage looks like. That is what love looks like. I think one of my clients said it best when she said, “It’s a choice and you have to keep choosing that person every single day.”

One morning after one of my interviews I received a text from the bride. She said how much fun they’d had doing the interview and how it was the refresh button they had been needing to hit for a while now. That text alone made this entire project worth it to me. Sometimes remembering why and how you started helps continue to push you forward again. I hope you keep remembering the why and I hope you fight hard for that. But also, to always remember to choose happiness. If you can’t find that happiness anymore, I hope you have the courage to go out and look for it again.

I was inspired to do this project for so many reasons, but in the end it really just boiled down to the fact that I really love my clients. I feel incredibly lucky to have had so many beautiful people to photograph in the last ten years, you’ve all made this career so wonderful for me and I wish you all many, many more dances in the kitchen.
