Esther Towler Photographer

Esther Towler Photographer I'm a fine art photographer and photo-encaustic artist who creates limited edition prints inspired by horses for art collectors, hotels, designers and brands.

I
also take on a small number of equine fine art commissions across the UK and internationally. “Through my artwork, I tell stories of the wild at heart. Encapsulating the beauty, heart and fragility of wild and rare horses in their natural world. My work explores the very essence of the freedom and peace horses evoke. One of the most beautiful sights in the world is a horse running without restr

aint. Undoubtedly, the power of this wild abandon is why horses inspire my love for photography and fuel my continued creative journey. Horses stir many emotions within us, they are the embodiment of freedom and spirit. In Eastern spiritual traditions, they say that there’s a wind horse who exudes powerful positive energy that has the capacity to influence outcomes, people and society. They believe that Horses inspire us to have faith and believe in positive outcomes within our life. I find this truly inspiring and I’d love to think that the artwork I make has a little of this spirit and belief running through the very core of all my artwork as each and every horse I’m lucky enough to share a moment with and photograph is very special to me. They deserve their moment to shine and share their beauty, light and essence, elementally encapsulated within one of my prints for everyone who seeks their own personal wind horse.”

Some post arrived this morning that I will treasure forever.

Wild Hearts was written as a love letter to Britain’s rare native horse breeds, to bear witness before their stories are lost.

I never imagined it would find its way quite so far. I am truly, deeply honoured.🤍

Four weeks ago this moorland was on fire.

This morning I went back to Saddleworth Moor and honestly, the regeneration has been extraordinary. The moorland has just quietly got on with it. Already green, already growing.

I made cyanotypes on site while I was there, pressing the new growth and whatever the burned ground gave me directly onto the paper. Some of them have actual moor debris in them : grit, scorched fragments, all of it.

That feels right to me. The prints should hold the truth of the place.

This is what the Elemental series is about. A year on the moor, month by month, bearing witness to whatever is actually happening out there.

Today it was something I wasn’t expecting.

Something very special is in the making.

This print is an artist's proof, the first piece from an upcoming collection I've been quietly working toward for some time.

Thirteen rare native horse breeds. Thirteen original Van D**e Brown prints. One per breed. Each one is handmade using one of photography's oldest processes, silver nitrate and sunlight on sensitised paper, and each one is completely unrepeatable.

Van D**e Brown is a 19th-century photographic process that produces these extraordinary, warm, painterly tones. The dark border you see around each image isn't added; it's formed by the chemistry itself bleeding naturally beyond the negative. Every piece is therefore unique, right to its very edges.
The Wild Hearts Van D**e Brown Collection is coming soon. Each original will be one of one; there will never be another.

Something exciting is coming!

For the first time, a carefully selected collection of my original artworks will be available to purchase directly from my website, launching next week.
These are one-of-a-kind pieces from my alternative process collections — cyanotypes, Van D**e Brown prints, and photo-encaustic works. Each one is made slowly, by hand, using ancient processes that cannot be rushed and cannot be repeated.

If you'd like to be among the first to know when they go live and have the best chance of collecting a piece before they're gone, join my Collectors Circle. Link in bio.

This made my heart sing. 🥹

Last Saturday I opened my studio doors and welcomed the most wonderful people in to see my work — original cyanotypes, Van D**e Brown prints, photo-encaustics and everything in between. Watching people encounter these ancient processes for the first time and feel something — that’s why I do what I do.

This review arrived the following morning, and I’m still smiling.

“Had a wonderful visit listening to Esther’s artistic processes and appreciating her beautiful, rare horse breed photography. Was blown away 😊”

Thinking about owning an original cyanotype? Here's what you need to know 🌿
1. Every piece is truly unique
The same cyanotype can never be exactly recreated — the light, the plants, the weather on that day are gone forever. You're not buying a print run, you're buying a moment.

2. They're made with chemistry, not ink
Cyanotypes are created using iron salts and UV light — one of photography's oldest processes, dating back to the 1840s. The Prussian blue colour is the chemistry itself.

3. They need a little care
Avoid hanging in direct sunlight — UV light will fade the image over time. UV protective glazing when framing is essential.

4. The deckled edges are intentional
Those beautiful rough edges are part of the work — they're not imperfections, they're handmade.

5. Each one comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
So you always know exactly what you own and who made it.

In Eastern spiritual traditions, the Windhorse carries powerful positive energy: moving through the world simply by existing, capable of influencing everything it touches.

When I made this piece, I wasn’t thinking about technique or process. I was thinking about that feeling. The horse emerging from the blue, half-seen, half imagined: the way wildness always is when you encounter it in the real world, a glimpse before it disappears.

This is a cyanotype with white charcoal, two ancient processes working together. But more than that, it’s an attempt to hold something of that spirit still. Long enough for you to feel it too.

What a truly wonderful day. 🌿

Yesterday I opened my studio doors for the first time this year and welcomed the most lovely people in to see my work: thank you so much to everyone who came. It meant more than you know.

It was such a joy to share the making, talk about the processes behind the work, and spend time with people who genuinely care about art and the natural world.

The studio will be open again: watch this space for the next date. In the meantime, if you’d like to see more of what’s been happening in the studio lately, the link is in my bio. 🤍
