Machu Picchu es una ciudadela inca ubicada en las alturas de las montañas de los Andes en Perú, sobre el valle del río Urubamba. Se construyó en el siglo XV y luego fue abandonada, y es famosa por sus sofisticadas paredes de piedra seca que combinan enormes bloques sin el uso de un mortero, los edificios fascinantes que se relacionan con las alineaciones astronómicas y sus vistas panorámicas. El uso exacto que tuvo sigue siendo un misterio. se cree que fue una de las residencias del noveno inca del Tahuantinsuyo, Pachacútec, aunque en ella también están los restos de un santuario. Su nombre significa montaña vieja, y hace alusión al lugar donde se ubica, a unos 2453 metros de altura, en un promontorio rocoso entre los cerros de Huchuy Picchu y Huayna Picchu.
Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel located high in the Andes mountains in Peru, above the valley of the Urubamba river. Built in the 15th century and then abandoned, it is famous for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that combine huge blocks without the use of mortar, fascinating buildings that relate to astronomical alignments, and panoramic views. Its exact use remains a mystery. It is believed that it was one of the residences of the ninth Inca of Tahuantinsuyo, Pachacútec, although there are also the remains of a sanctuary. Its name means old mountain, and refers to the place where it is located, at an altitude of 2,453 meters, on a rocky promontory between the hills of Huchuy Picchu and Huayna Picchu.
