People often skip Luzhi and head straight for Tongli or Wuzhen. It is less famous and less polished, and that is exactly why it is worth a visit. Luzhi is a quieter Suzhou water town with no entrance fee. Its three‑by‑three canal system is said to form the ancient character “甪”, and at the main gate you will see a statue of the mythical Luduan, a creature that local legend says understands all languages and rescues people from the water.

Walk inside and you find yourself in a maze of old houses and deep courtyard compounds, some stretching five or even seven sections back. It feels like slipping into layers of hidden Suzhou alleyways instead of a theme park style “ancient town”. There is real history here as well: Baosheng Temple, founded in 503, holds Tang dynasty Arhat wall sculptures that were listed among China’s earliest nationally protected cultural relics. Nearby, the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall stands on the site where the famous educator taught and coined the modern Chinese subject name “Yuwen”.

If you are coming to Tongli or the Suzhou area, save half a day for Luzhi. Come with modest expectations and a curious mindset, and you will find a quieter, more authentic Jiangnan water town that still feels lived in rather than staged. For more guide in Suzhou, check here:

👫Lazy three day Fuzhou plan in case you want a slow city break:

Day 1:
Start in Sanfang Qixiang early, then visit the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall, Xichan Temple and finish with a walk on Fudao.

Day 2:
Use Day 2 to wander around the Lin Zexu Former Residence, Fuzhou University, Yishan Cultural and Creative Park, West Lake Park and Fujian Museum. They are all close to the Day 1 area so it feels like a deeper dive instead of a new route.

Day 3:
Wander through Shangxiahang, stroll to Youth Square by the Min River, then cross to Yantai Mountain Park for old consulates, churches and a small art museum. End the day in Wanchun Lane.

Day 4:
Go out to Gushan, walk around Shibajing Park and spend unhurried time at Yongquan Temple.

Sanfang Qixiang and Shangxiahang are a bit commercial but still full of historic mansions and narrow lanes, the Lin Zexu sites are truly inspiring, Yantai Mountain keeps that old treaty port feel, and Gushan with Yongquan Temple is the calmest part of the trip.

Best “Weight Loss Trail” in Fuzhou 🌳

If you want a scenic walk that actually makes you break a sweat, Fudao is the place. This suspended skywalk on Jinniu Mountain, built with an all steel structure and an open grid design, links multiple city parks into a 19 km eco corridor with incredible views. It is also highly photogenic for drone shots, but be aware that drone rules in China are strict and many areas are not officially permitted, so always check local regulations and fly responsibly.

Most people cannot handle the full 19 km in one go, so a popular and more manageable option is Entrance 3 to Entrance 5. Even then, my Apple Watch logged at least 6.5 km, so plan based on your fitness level. Exit 5 has a large plaza, which makes parking and getting a taxi easy. Along the way, you will see helpful ecology signs on the trees. Common species include osmanthus, persimmon, banyan, camphor, willow, and acacia, and you might spot tree frogs, egrets, nightingales, crested hawks, squirrels, and muntjac deer, with occasional reports of foxes. After the hike, it is a quick taxi ride to MixC Mall for a great meal and some shopping.

🎊 Adding a little good luck to your hair today.

🧷 This phoenix hair stick is inspired by a traditional symbol of fortune and celebration. The glossy metal shine, blue green enamel style details, and that tiny pop of red feel festive but still elegant. The tassels sway when you move, so it looks extra lively in photos. Love it for a low bun or a quick half up style. It holds securely and instantly becomes the focal point, whether you wear hanfu, qipao, or a modern outfit with a Chinese inspired touch.

👯‍♀️Which hairstyle are you wearing most lately, low bun or half up?

As an expat in Shanghai, I often head to Ningbo whenever I need a break from the fast pace here. It’s close by, easy to reach, and I really enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere, the good seafood, and exploring some of the city’s historical spots. It’s a great change of scenery without having to go too far. If you’re curious about what I got up to, feel free to check out my trip diary—I’ve added a link with some notes and highlights from my itinerary!
