Der nicht-kommerzielle Kunstraum setzt sich von der üblichen Funktion eines Schaufensters als verführerische Warenauslage ab, doch einige Beiträge nehmen die naheliegende Assoziation durchaus auf – wie etwa die auf dem Cover abgebildete Installation "Open Source" des Fotokünstlers Menno Aden, der Räume von oben fotografiert und im Juli 2017 den raumfüllenden Print seines Topshots von einem Kiosk vom Prenzlauer Berg ins Schaufenster stellte.

Spannungsvolle Irritation

Um das Bild in den Raum hinein zu erweitern, stellte Aden Getränkekästen, Winkekatzen und eine blinkende "Open"-Anzeige vor die Fototapete. Die um 90 Grad gekippte Draufsicht auf den Laminatboden eines "Späti" und dessen Auslage sorgt für eine spannungsvolle Irritation. Beim Book Launch erklärt Aden, dass er mit der zugrundeliegenden Fotoserie den verschwundenen Kiosken der Linien- und Auguststraße seine Reverenz erweisen wollte. "Hier hat die Gentrifizierung Berlins mit am stärksten zugeschlagen", sagt der Fotograf.

【ROOM PORTRAITS】

房間內的裝潢擺設，未必要時常更換才有新鮮感，有時用新角度觀察會讓你發現新的美。德國攝影師MENNO ADEN的《ROOM PORTRAITS》系列會用高空拍攝不同的房間、店鋪、課室等，原本立體的事物變成平面後呈現出另類視覺效果。攝影師剛開始先從朋友的房間實驗這個拍攝手法，後來將主體延伸至公共空間，他認為從俯瞰一個小的空間很有趣，因為可以看到於每個人隱藏的個性。

"The best way to predict the future is to design it," said Buckminster Fuller, and Menno Aden's latest exhibition DEVICES at Berlin project space IN THE RACK ROOM takes this idea to a whole new level. For Aden is showing images of speculative devices for "improving our lives“, that he has created using AI-based text-image generators. In doing so, Aden explores the possibilities of shaping the future through artificial intelligence and offers a reflection on the often unquestioned belief in technology as progress and solution to our problems. By highlighting the limitations of AI-generated objects as oddly pleasing but non-functional or nonsensical, Aden opens up a slightly disorienting space to think critically about the role and meaning of technology in our lives and the future we wish to create.

The specific-but-random devices were generated from text-prompts to improve human living conditions, such as safety, freedom, or nutrition ("bionic devices to ensure safety“, "devices for stabilization of freedom“, etc). Based on the premise of the AI, the devices are created from a pool of pre-existing objects, a process that again implies human desires and fantasies. After all, technology not only helps us, it influences us, or as Marshall McLuhan famously said, "We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us."
