Totholzhecke: Naturschutz trifft Sichtschutz! 🌿

Day turns into night so quickly up here in Östersund – one moment it’s soft blue dusk, the next it’s completely dark. 🌙❄️

On December 5th we even got a little treat: an incoming aurora borealis. It was mostly visible only through the camera sensor and, of course, the clouds rolled in faster than we hoped, hiding the stronger part of the solar storm. But with a bright full moon above and a faint green glow on the horizon, we still caught a glimpse of the magic. ✨

Östersund by night is beautiful and very icy right now. The warmer weather keeps turning the snow and rain into glassy sidewalks and frozen boardwalks – definitely a “wear your spikes or stay inside” situation. But with the lights reflecting off all that ice, the city feels like a frozen mirror.

Stay incredibly wild! Kat

Headed up north for a few days in pre-winter Östersund, Sweden ❄️

Östersund is a small lakeside city in the middle of the country, surrounded by forests, mountains and endless calm. It calls itself the “Winter City” – and you can feel why: crisp air, quiet streets, and that cozy Swedish mix of coffee, candles and wool layers everywhere you go.

Right now there are only about five hours of daylight, from late morning to mid-afternoon, so every ray of sun feels like gold. I made the most of the short days and that one clear, sunny day to wander along the water and snap as many photos as I could. 📸✨

Already dreaming of coming back when it’s deep winter and everything is covered in snow.

Thay incredibly wild you guys!

Wherever I am, I belong to me…
…and to the South African Bush. 🌿✨

There’s a unique serenity that fills my soul when I’m surrounded by this untamed wilderness. The rustle of the trees, the songs of the birds, and the vast, endless skies remind me of the pure joy found in simplicity.
Here, time slows down, and life feels beautifully raw and real. Every moment in the bush whispers calmness, grounding me and helping me rediscover what truly matters. 🌍💚

Stay incredibly wild my friends!

Good morning everybody for your first baby elephant morning trunk gymnastics session.

Please do as you see in the pictures. If you don’t have a trunk, well, use your arms.
Everybody ready in 3,…2, and 1.

1. While inhaling, stretch your trunk straight forward.
2. Exhale and let it hang down.
3. Lift your trunk up while inhaling and curl it inwards.
4. While exhaling, take a break and scratch your eye for 10 seconds, then continue with the exercise.
5. Turn your body ¼ to the right and stretch your trunk to the left.
6. Continue for 10 more minutes and then get back to feeding or fiddling around with your trunk.
Thank you for taking this morning class with me.

Have a good and healthy day. See you next time, and always stay incredibly wild!
Kat

P.S. This cutie and his family visited us in camp while feeding on juicy grass, just 4 meters away from our tents. This was so awesome.

Don't you just love the pure wilderness, where you can encounter wild animals without a fence in between? At and around our camp, we almost had daily visits from a variety of wildlife. From Hyenas to Elephants, and even Lions and Cheetahs. One of the coolest aspects of being an Apprentice Field and Trails Guide is that you learn to assess situations much better, gaining a deep understanding of the wilderness and the behavior of the wild animals living in these bushlands.

The White Rhino in the picture was calmly drinking at a pond right outside our campsite, fully aware of us standing there watching this magnificent creature. In the video, you can see four White Rhinos attempting to cross the dry riverbed on the other side of the camp to move through the campsite, which is a big no-no. Due to their poor eyesight, a whistle is a good initial response. Since they didn't react as hoped, a clap of the hands and a firm “Hey” did the job, and they moved off. (The video is edited, we all move to a safer spot, just in case they came up into camp).

As you can see, even though Rhinos are incredibly strong animals, you don’t need to apply full force to manage them. The approach always depends on the situation.
