Would you spent two hours capturing one single Hyperlapse?

A lot of people ask me if I create those day to night transitions by combining two different Hyperlapses. While that´s a super easys way to showcase the transition from day to night, the Hyperlapse you can see here is taken in one single shot.

Over the course of 2 hours and 15 minutes I took 650 images and moved roughly 60 meters. While doings so I changed the settings of my camera, starting with shutter speed, aperture next and ISO as the last setting to change.

Why shutter speed first? In every Hyperlapse I try to capture motion blur of people, cars or anything else that´s moving. This will make the final video look a lot smoother as they will not just „pop up“ in frame for the fraction of a second. So by dialing in longer shutter speeds while light fades aways, so will people moving in front of your camera.

To smooth out the exposure changes from adjusting the camera settings I use the Holy Grail Wizard in

For the intro part I did some masking and used the Content-Aware Fill by to generate the sky behind the tower.

By the way, did you know this building has been destroyed by roughly 50% during the war? It´s amazing how this and other places in Berlin have been rebuild since then.

I think number one is my biggest secret when it comes to creating Hyperlapses. Also that’s what I tell people when they ask me how they can get better. You can’t rush things if you want to do it right. So take your time, practice & repeat!
