In a small pond, a farmer waded through waist-deep water. The lotus flowers open in the early morning hours – exactly when they are harvested. The fresher and more flawless the flowers are, the better they can be sold at roadside stalls. They are then used as decoration, made into aromatic tea, or incorporated into numerous dishes of Vietnamese cuisine. In this region of northern Vietnam, the lotus blooms for only about a month each year, and the owner of the pond has to earn his entire annual income from his small “Lotus Pond.”
