Meet Sathya. A beautiful mare now in her late twenties, who has been by her owner’s side since she was young.

Last year, her owner commissioned this Vintage Portrait to celebrate all those years together and the memories they’ve made along the way.

There’s something particularly touching about photographing older horses, especially when they’ve spent almost their entire lives with the same person. Being trusted to capture that bond in a portrait is always rather special to me.

And seeing how much these portraits mean to their owners makes it all the more lovely 🖤

I think one of the things I love most about what I do is knowing how much these portraits mean to the people I create them for.

It’s not just about creating beautiful artwork. It’s about giving someone the opportunity to have their beloved animal captured in a way that feels just as special as they are to them.

And knowing that my work gets to become a little part of someone’s home and something they’ll treasure for years to come is pretty wonderful, if you ask me.

Ad | Want to bring even more creativity into your portrait photography?

Sometimes, all it takes is a different background to completely transform the mood and atmosphere of a portrait.

With digital backdrops, you can take your black background portraits even further, explore different looks and create entirely new atmospheres in post-processing — without having to carry physical backdrops to every photoshoot.

More creative freedom, more possibilities, and all the flexibility to bring your vision to life ✨

The Pantely Backdrop Collection Starter Bundle includes 8 different backdrop styles, giving you plenty of room to experiment and find the perfect look for your portraits.

Also included is a video tutorial where I share the technique that makes the biggest difference in achieving natural, seamless transitions around fur, manes and tails.

In a world where almost anything can be generated in seconds, there’s something special about knowing a piece of art was made by a real person.

My vintage portraits bring together photography, art and a love for traditional craftsmanship. Every horse is photographed by me, every detail carefully considered, and every finished piece personally framed by hand.

And in a world increasingly filled with AI-generated images, I think there’s something quite beautiful about that.

You may have noticed that the backdrop I photograph against isn’t always the one you see in my finished portraits.

And there’s a rather practical reason for that.

I work with digital backdrops in post-production, which gives me the freedom to explore different moods, colours and atmospheres long after the actual photoshoot. I don’t have to decide beforehand exactly what the finished portrait should look like. I can let the image take shape as I work on it.

And perhaps my favourite part? I only ever need to bring one physical backdrop to a shoot. No travelling around with an entire collection of painted canvases. Quite a luxury when you’re photographing animals on location.

Since so many of you have enjoyed my handbook, "The Art of Timeless Portraits", I thought it was about time I shared another little piece of my creative process.

So, for the first time, I’ve made a selection of my own digital backdrops available to fellow photographers.

Whether you’re drawn to that rich, painterly look of classical portraiture or simply want a little more creative freedom with your black-background photographs, these are the very backdrops I use to bring my own portraits to life.

And now they’re yours to experiment with, too.

You can find them via the link in my profile, or simply comment BACKDROPS and I’ll send you the link.

Oh, and there’s a little launch discount at the moment, too ✨

Hello everyone 🌻

You don’t need another fancy editing technique to make your portraits more compelling. You need to understand what the image needs, and why.

The biggest shift in my editing didn’t come from learning another technique. It came from learning to look at an image and ask better questions.

Where does my eye go first?
Where should it go first?

What is competing for attention?
What needs to quiet down?
What deserves more emphasis?

Because that is what visual hierarchy really is: deciding what the viewer notices first, what supports it and what should quietly fall into the background.

And that can be the difference between an image that is perfectly nice and one that immediately pulls you in. One that feels clear, intentional and impossible to scroll past.

Sometimes that means shaping the light. Sometimes softening a distracting area, separating the subject from the background, controlling highlights or changing the balance of contrast and colour.

The technique is only the tool. The real skill is knowing what the image needs in order to become stronger.

That is one of the principles I go much deeper into in my digital handbook „The Art of Timeless Portraits“, together with the editing techniques I use to actually create that hierarchy in my own work.

👉 If you want to move beyond collecting editing tricks and start creating portraits that feel genuinely compelling, you’ll find the handbook via the link in my bio or comment HANDBOOK and I’ll send you the link.

And for the next 24 hours, you can get an extra 15% off.

You spend enough years with a horse and, somehow, they stop feeling like an animal you own and start becoming part of the scenery of your life. The face you know better than most human faces, the particular look that means trouble, the sound of them moving around before you even turn to see.

All terribly ordinary while it is happening. And, of course, not ordinary at all.

Perhaps that is why I have always loved the idea of a proper portrait. Something made with enough care to outlast the moment it came from. Not because a photograph can keep a horse forever, but because some of them deserve more than being left to the camera roll.
