Egypt’s second-largest city, Alexandria, lies in the Eastern Mediterranean, a top climate change hotspot that has dealt with record global air and ocean temperatures this year. Egypt-based photojournalist Hamada Elrasam presents scenes of everyday life that have been impacted by the changing climate phenomenon in the low-lying metropolis that has survived over two millennia, only to find itself on this century’s climate frontlines.

Egypt’s eighth annual Aswan International Women Film Festival took place from April 20 to 25. This year’s focus was on the resilience of women, with Egypt’s economic turmoil and the war in neighboring Gaza as a backdrop. Cairo-based photojournalist Hamada Elrasam captured scenes around the festival in Aswan, Egypt’s southernmost city known as the country’s ancient gateway.

Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years until he was ousted in the 2011 Arab Spring, died on February 25, 2020 at the age of 91. His death was confirmed by the state TV and local news after he was immediately buried in his family's cemetery in the Egyptian capital. Cairo photojournalist Hamada Elrasam shows that while some Egyptians see Mubarak as a tyrant, others honor him in a positive light for the stability he brought the world's most populous Arab nation in what was its longest presidency.
