RAY SMITH STUDIO
Imagery from the Edges of Memory

Ray Smith is a UK-based photographer whose work fuses analogue techniques with surreal digital treatments. He began in the darkroom as a black and white printer and trained under iconic fashion photographers including David Bailey, Terence Donovan, John Swannell, Robert Erdmann, and Clive Arrowsmith, with early credits in i-D, The Face, Blitz, and

Ritz. Through Ray Smith Studio, he creates custom portraits and collaborative pieces for collectors, performers, and exhibitions โ€” producing images that are tactile, poetic, and quietly unsettling. If youโ€™d like to be portrayed in your own custom piece, just say the word.

A walk across The Skern at low tide, following the mudflats, tidal channels, valleys and inlets between Appledore and Northam Burrows.

From above it looks broad and open, but once you step down into the channels the landscape changes completely. The mud forms ridges, miniature cliffs and strange eroded shapes, while the huge sky makes the whole place feel remote and almost otherworldly.

It is difficult, muddy ground, but visually extraordinary โ€” exactly the sort of landscape Iโ€™m drawn to photograph and explore.

Part of my ongoing work around people, place, memory and atmosphere in North Devon.

How I trigger studio flash wirelessly from a Mamiya C220.

A simple setup using a wireless trigger and receiver, plus the crucial adapter and male-to-male sync lead needed to connect everything properly to the C220.

The key piece is the adapter: it has both a hot shoe and a PC sync socket. That allows the wireless receiver to sit on the hot shoe while the male-to-male PC sync lead connects the adapter to the sync socket on the Mamiya lens.
When the shutter fires, the signal travels through the sync lead to the receiver, which then triggers the flash wirelessly.

One small correction to the video: when I say the sync connection is โ€œnext to the camera,โ€ I mean next to the lens.

Old medium-format camera, modern wireless flash โ€” and it works perfectly.

That was from my YouTube channel for photography, film, visual art and the process behind the work.

FIRST ROLL BACK

My first roll of film in around 20 years.

Shot on a Yashica A with Fomapan 200, these are Bonnie and Flicker in Appledore at dusk โ€” the last of the high summer light disappearing behind them.

No screen, no instant checking, no safety net. Just the meter, the camera and a decision: f/8 at 1/60 sec.

Thereโ€™s something wonderfully physical about returning to film after two decades. The waiting. The uncertainty. And then finally seeing what was actually there.

These feel less like photographs of horses to me and more like shapes emerging out of the evening โ€” one close and monumental, the other almost disappearing into the landscape.

NORTH DEVON IN COLOUR

Seaside architecture reduced to shape, shadow and accidental geometry

Exploring a different direction with some older North Devon photographs โ€” simplifying the landscape into colour, geometry, shadows and those odd little details that make British seaside architecture what it is.

Kirka โ€” Highgate Cemetery

A set-piece fantasy portrait created on location at Highgate Cemetery, using daylight, flash and reflectors to build the atmosphere rather than simply record the setting.

Kirka was designer, make-up artist and model, creating the clothes, hair, make-up and overall character herself. I built the portrait around her and the location, with the mirrored treatment taking it into a more surreal, constructed world.

This is the kind of portrait session I love โ€” part portrait, part fashion image, part theatre: creating an entire visual world around one person.photography
