Reflective.

First post in a long while from me as life has got in the way of doing what I love but that all changed last week.

Epic times were had with Phill, LACE, Kim and Natasha in various beautiful locations in North Wales.

Our home for the weekend was an old stone hut in the back of beyond. Perfection.

We visited some caves near Porthmaddog on Friday night and as dusk fell I could drag the shutter a little. So I reached for the camera rotation tool and asked Phill to hold still for a wee while.

180 degree flip of the camera during a long exposure.

Happy days.

The Grey Ladies.

Friday night found me at 9 Stones Close, a Neolithic/Bronze Age Stone Circle near the town of Matlock with Phill Fisher and Lace Light Photos I met them in a layby just after sunset for an evening of chat, 6 Music, light painting and stars. Lots of stars.

After a quick brew, a Tunnocks Tea Cake and a catch up we proceeded to the Stone Circle.

On arrival we were greeted by a perfectly still evening, zero cloud cover and no moon. Perfect for capturing the night sky. Especially in an area with very little light pollution.

Being stood under the arch of the Milky Way, wondering about the history of such a place throughout the ages was intoxicating to me.

I found the below excerpt on ( www.stone-circles.org.uk/stone/ninestones.htm ) whilst looking into its history which made me laugh...

"There are several legends and myths attached to the circle, one claims that the stones dance at midday, another says they dance at midnight, while locals in the 19th century claimed that strange lights were sometimes seen in nearby wood. Another story recorded in the 19th century tells of a farm labourer who found a clay pipe at the stones, and when he smoked it, was able to see through the surface of the earth near one of the stones to a land inhabited by fairy folk".

I didn't see any fairies or smoke any discarded clay pipes but I did have an awesome time in excellent company all the same.

Cheers to Phill and Paul for their company, lighting and modelling skills.

Happy days.

Under Lock and Key.

I'm back home now with my awesome family after a long weekend away with my light family in the North of Spain. The beautiful location in Galicia, the incredibly delicious food and drink, the amazing people and the common love of light painting has stirred the embers inside me to create again. I'll remember this weekend for the rest of my days and I hope to visit again soon.

Special thanks to Frodo Álvarez Dkl who so kindly drove me around, gave me a bed, fed me so well and translated for me. A true gentleman and a very special person. You're the best. Iris Shyroii for the incredibly kind gift which I will treasure forever and her translation skills. It's always a joy to be with you mate. Hugo Baptista for your companionship and support throughout the weekend. Your speech was incredible and it was an honour to stand beside you. Marcos López Alonso for guiding me to the Pulpo and for the amazing light painting tool you kindly gave me. I will be using it soon my friend. Finally Mikel Diaz. What an amazing human being you are and I'll remember your kindness forever. You really helped calm my nerves with your words of support. I loved my time with everyone present, regardless of the language barrier and I promise to learn Spanish in the future 😘

To all of the organisers. You created a very special event and your tireless work to ensure everything ran smoothly was admirable and appreciated by everyone who I spoke with. You've created an amazing event which would be nothing without you. Much love.

Thanks also for the invitation to speak amongst such incredible artists in all areas of long exposure photography. It still blows my mind that people would want me to tell my light art story, and for it to be so well received makes my heart swell. I'm so grateful you asked me to come.

I bagged this one after my talk with an audience of about 20 people. To say the pressure was on is an understatement as I hadn't practiced it beforehand. Two tripods for this. One for the two people and one for the backlit jail door. It's not perfect but close enough for me to get the technique across.

Adiós amigos.

Happy days ❤️❤️

The Lady of Anglesey Barracks.

I had a beaut of a weekend in North Wales last weekend with some of my favourite camera people.

This one from the last night where Kim, Natasha and I had a mooch down the hill to Anglesey Barracks in Dinorwic Slate quarry.

Kim went first and bagged a banger then Natasha kindly modelled for me in her amazing costume whilst I got the camera spinning again. Net curtains were wafted in unison with the orange filter and much merriment was made.

180 flip of the camera between net curtain fire and a pop of torch light to illuminate Natasha.

Thanks both for a lovely evening and to everyone for such a beaut of a weekend.

Happy days and fingers crossed I'll get back out in the darkness again soon.

Happy days.

Foreboding

Back from another superb weekend of photography with Phill and Paul up in The Peak District.

Here with a return to a beautifully characterful tree I shot in the mist a few weeks back, given some light painting treatment.

Light Painting Brushes Orange filter on my torch at the end of the track illuminating the depths of the forest, followed by a sweep back to camera with the LACE/Pala Back Light Scanner.

23k heavy steps from when I woke up Friday morning, back to a tent with 2 sleeping bags, fully clothed in minus 5 degrees was a deep yet intermittent sleep.

Always a joy to catch up chaps and here's to the next one.

Happy days.

Starman.

Another from our time around the Abbey last weekend. I'd enjoy spending time there without the camera and company, as you can only imagine all the history and memories created here over the many years since it's construction.

Add a camera, LP tools, beer and top company and you're onto a winner.

Cheers to Mart for holding still, Phill for lending me his TS lens (want one) and to Paul for being Paul.

Backlight using my Ryus torch and the orange filter. Then a couple of sweeps back to camera on each side using the DLW.

Stargate.

Another from our recent Yorkshire jaunt. Whilst Mart, Paul and Phill finished their creations by the temple I mooched off to this art installation close by.

I was kindly helped by the chaps to ameliorate my stars on my DLW to finer points of light and was keen to put it to use here.

Lit using the beautiful back light scanner, then a generous waft of the DLW within the confines of the portal with a swift walk back to camera for a lead in with more stars.

We finished up shortly after and home for beers, food and a little more LP.

Perfect times.

Cheers chaps.

He'll See You Now.

Just back from another beaut of a weekend of photography, good food and drink in Yorkshire to our Abbey of choice.

This one was from our last night and came together with the help of Phill, Mart and Paul. Thanks for the input chaps.

A simple 180 flip of the Abbey with some net curtain/ fire behind Mr F for each rotation. Paul on cross lighting and Mart on the shutter button/capping. It was supposed to be star circles behind Phill but my DLW ran out of juice.

Always such great times together and I can't wait to see everyone's shots from the weekend.

Happy days.

In the beginning.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting the chap who got the ball rolling (no pun intended) for me in the first place with light art last weekend. Not only meeting but spending a fair chunk of time with him. Chatting about our beautiful artform and life in general.

I still remember stumbling across Denis' video about his life and how it changed when he discovered LP. This sparked something in me when I watched it and over 10 years later that spark is still sparking.

This is from our first evening together in the ruins of an old castle, with a collection of other, similarly inclined night photographers enjoying each other's company and creating as we went.

Grabbing a shot of has been high on my list of wishes but I never thought it would happen. As the night drew to a close we both had a few minutes to grab a quick shot of one another.

Led panel light on the stairs and me behind Den with the trusty net curtain,
Universal connector with orange filter for the fire and back light. A quick run round in circles for the foreground illumination and job done.

Quick and simple and nothing too fancy so as to let the location and subject shine.

The best times in the best company and fingers crossed all of our paths will meet again one day soon.

Happy days.

Roasted Wild Garlic.

A lovely night out with my mate Paulo looking for round two of the promised Aurora last night. It was a no show but I managed to capture a burning man in a patch of woodland so not a wasted journey.

Usual single long exposure, net curtain, BLS and orange filter type of a night.
