🌟Blooming Life🌟

Soon the majestic Tajinaste Rojo starts to bloom again. I captured this image last year in May, in one of my favorite places on Earth: the Teide National Park in Tenerife.
Around 2000 meters above the mean sea level and nicely surrounded by the volcanic terrain, the National Park offers exceptionally dark skies, and otherworldly landscapes. I find joy and fulfillment in searching for compositions, and spending hours out in the wilderness at night. It is not always easy, as it is often really cold, and when sleepiness kicks in things start to get even harder. But looking at the outcome I always realize: hard work and perseverance always pay out.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints…

The magnificent Tajinaste Rojo (Echium wildpretii) in full bloom at the elevation of 2000m on the Teide Volcano. The species is endemic to the Canary Islands, and is found mainly on Mount Teide in Tenerife. It is a biennial, producing a dense rosette of leaves during the first year, flowers in the second year, and then dies.

What a beautiful life story.

Silver Gate

After a week of cloudy and quite often rainy weather, finally we got blessed with clear skies. That was my chance to capture some of the long-awaited objects of the southern night sky. I imagined this scene way before we arrived in the Seychelles. These million years old giant granite rocks accompanied by The Southern Cross, Alpha Centauri A or the Carina Nebula – just to name a few – put me, the photographer behind the camera, into a perspective. A perspective of vast time and space that characterizes the universe.

Although the image displays a calm and quiet scene, taking it was a rather adventurous process. First of all, shooting on a tripod in the ocean is not easy. The water was in a constant move, sometimes some bigger waves came and I had to make sure that my equipment didn't get harmed. In the meantime, some big fishes swam around my legs, on the beach dozens of crabs were on the go, and the waves made it quite noisy around me.

As the weather is very dynamic around the Equator, I was strongly time limited. I could see some clouds in the distance soaring in slowly, so I had to act quickly. I had my star tracker with me, but I decided not to use it, as I definitely would’ve wasted some precious minutes with the setup and alignment. Aligning so close to the Equator is anyway not easy, as the reference objects are so close to the horizon which is often quite hazy. The night sky itself is absolutely breathtaking, full of bright, colorful and remarkable objects. Swipe through the images for explanation!

Some further images from the winter wonderland morning of the 9th December.

After catching Comet Leonard, I felt somewhat accomplished and took it slow. But soon I understood that even though the stars slowly started to disappear as the Sun conquered the horizon, the magic stayed around me.
Despite the fact that I had a very short sleep before my adventure, I felt energized and I couldn’t care less about the extreme cold temperature.

It was a morning of pure tranquility.

LEONARD

9th of December 2021, early morning. During the previous day I was monitoring the weather forecasts and it all looked promising.

I had an alarm set at 4am, but my inner excitement woke me up way earlier.
It was a really cold, but clear night. The temperature dropped into the -20s on the Celsius scale, and freezing fog was forming on everything. It took half an hour to defrost the car, and at that time I didn’t know how gorgeous it would look everywhere, further away from civilization.

I was going to catch comet Leonard.

As I drove through the darkness, Orion was about to set in front of me. When I arrived at the location, my excitement was peaking, so I couldn’t care less about the freezing cold.

I’ve set up my beloved JAY tripod and did a rough alignment of my star tracker. Against all the odds (deep snow and extreme cold) I managed to align my whole setup quite accurately, without even looking through the polar scope. My Ipsoot gloves did a good job to keep my fingers warm as was setting up everything and later on changed lenses, etc.

I used my favorite app to locate comet Leonard as it was still not bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. The app is called Sky Guide - I use it always whenever I need orientation or any information about any space object.

I started to shoot with a wide angle lens, and step by step narrowed it down all the way to the 200mm end of my Tamron 70-200 G2 telephoto lens. Using the star tracker I managed to shoot 60 sec exposures at the 200mm focal length, with the stars remaining perfect pinpoints.

For compositional purposes the final image is a perspective/time blend.

EXIF:
Location: Latvian countryside, with Bortle 3 sky
Camera: Nikon D810A
Sky: Lens - Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 at 200mm | Star tracker: iOptron SkyGuider Pro
2x60 sec exposures stacked with Sequator for noise reduction | f/4 | ISO 1600
Foreground: Lens - Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2 at 32mm | 1/200s | f/5.6 | ISO 400
Shot 2 hours later than the sky at the same location.

I would like to introduce you my favorite astrolandscape photograph so far ⭐️
The image was taken at the altitude of 2000 meters inside the Volcano Teide National Park, late September. This is a composition I’ve imagined already at the planning stage of my Tenerife visit. I had to wait a couple of days to be able to make the shoot, as it was full moon at the time of our arrival to this magical island. I find a sweet harmony between the volcanic vegetation and the giant rock formations, accompanied by the autumn Milky Way arch which includes famous members of the prominent summer and winter night sky. - See the second photo with explanations of the visible cosmic objects -
Regarding the landscape, it displays a panorama of the famous Roque de García including the lovely Roque de Cinchado which will eventually collapse by it’s own weight at some point in the future due to the erosion. I was beyond happy to find this bush which creates an origo in the middle of the frame. For me, the image as a whole represents the Eden garden, as it includes almost all the elements I love in a landscape photograph.
The image is a blended composite of the land and sky, as I used my iOptron Skyguider Pro star tracker to shoot the stars. Both the land and the sky are a 6 frame vertical panorama. With my star tracker I was able to increase my shutter speed to 180 seconds each frame. I used f/4 and ISO 800 and got a nicely detailed, noise free sky.
Shot with my beloved Nikon D810A and Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 lens.
It you managed to read until here, I’d appreciate if you drop your thoughts about the photo in a comment 😉
P.s: thank you .sve and for being so patient and sleeping tight in the car while I was busy in the darkness.

The Weather Photographer of the Year 2021 contest is closing soon. This year, I have entered these images. All of them are very close to me, however they showcase different atmospheres, different seasons, and different locations they all have been processed in a unique way, in order to emphasize the "story".

Which one is your favorite?
