I finished two major paintings this year that I’ve worked on (and off on) for multiple years. I made two custom frames for paintings, and I’m finishing another very, very custom frame by the end of the year. Pictures and video of all of that will be coming soon. I’m also moving my website to another platform and have photographed and shot video of a lot of work, some new and some old.

Pictured here is “LA-557”, named after a label printed on the circuit board. The remaining electrical parts and wires came from my collection of dismantled radios and electronics from when I was a kid, so I’ve had them roughly 40 years and needed to use them on something to finally get rid of them. (I have a whole box remaining though.)

The materials are electrical parts on acrylic painted canvas pieces (glued together) mounted on mat board mounted on a raised wooden panel and enclosed under glass in a wood and aluminum frame from salvaged materials also built by myself. It measures 25.5” x 21” x 2.75” and weighs 16.5 lbs.

Enjoyed attending Art Basel Paris today at the Grand Palais. After reading about and seeing documentaries on the restoration of the Grand Palais leading up to the Olympics, it was very cool to see it in person.

We arrived back in Paris this morning. While walking through galleries in Saint Germain I was thrilled to meet artist Yannis Markantonakis at Galerie GNG and discover his incredible ship and ocean paintings. The fantastic color that first drew me in was followed by how lightly the ships hover as ghostly apparitions, though up close they’re rich in detail and texture. We both love painting oil on board. Yannis, it was great meeting you!

"Moving Shadows, W 37 Street and 6th Avenue, New York City, 2021" is one of my personal favorites of my NYC work so far. Taken from my hotel room window in a mere 1/2500 of a second, I think it captures a mesmerizing moment in the bustling city. It was the concrete patchwork of urban hues of cool gray and fading crosswalks that initially caught my eye. Then I was just waiting for something interesting to happen. That’s when the taxi aligned with the arc of the stoplight pole adding a sense of harmony to the frame. Bicyclists are coming at the taxi from the bottom-left and top-right with the bottom-left one deciding to just go through the middle of the intersection. The white bag of the top-left figure aligns with the white of the crosswalk. The top figure seemingly paces to step over the white stripes while the bottom figure is stepping from one to the next. The three bottom-right figures are the only ones in the frame going the same direction while everyone else is going different directions. I think the photograph encapsulates the city's constant movement within an interplay of light and moving shadows.

“Cabin in the Woods” was photographed 10 years ago at my parents house, not a cabin, using a double-exposure in the camera. No post-production! Well, little anyway. It was just licensed for a small print run book cover, some kind of trade publication probably. Perhaps a guide to yurt treehouses. I don’t know. Combining orange and blue is not just for contrast but a way of using how your eyesight works to produce a stronger response. I first understood the importance of this from the late Galen Rowell who often wrote about the science of vision in his column for Outdoor Photographer magazine in the 1990s as well as in his books.

This is a close-up of “Remnants from Tomorrow’s Reflections”, an oil on canvas from 2022. I also built the frame from reclaimed lumber. Outside dimensions are 18” x 10”. More images are coming soon.

For the second time in my life I’ve had to restore one of my own paintings. With this one,
“Becoming Full Circle” from 2017, I mistakenly stood it against a wall and separated it from another painting with a towel. Over time the fibers stuck all over it because the previous finish coat was not hard enough. I recently spent a few fun hours removing that coat with paint thinner and acetone and picking off individual fibers with tweezers.

Here I’m varnishing it with Golden MSA varnish which I’ve used for over 20 years. (“GOLDEN Mineral Spirit Acrylic Varnishes with UVLS (Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers) dry to a tough, yet flexible protective finish.”) I mix gloss with whatever amount of matte feels right for the particular painting combined with some solvent to thin it somewhat. Back when I first started using it I brushed on pure gloss straight out of the can. It was like pulling tree sap with a brush… until one day I read the can. Very glossy though! In these pictures it’s still wet, but it has since dried to a satin somewhat-gloss finish.
