Kevin Couliau articulates the beauty of basketball through photographs that express the nature, aesthetic and culture of the sport. Inspired by an early love for the game, the Paris-based photographer and filmmaker searches for stories that reveal basketball's impact on individuals and their communities, while demonstrating its universality throughout the world. ogy, urban design and architecture converge into the composition and content of his photographs, and in 2012 culminated into the award-winning documentary Doin’It In The Park , a film featuring New York City’s most prolific basketball courts and its historical pick-up basketball scene. Kevin Couliau publishes an independent magazine Asphalt Chronicles that distills topics and aesthetics of pick-up basketball culture. In addition he works on assignments globally for commercial clients including the NBA and Nike.

Summer is here, Girlz out ballin’
Paid a visit to women-led collective as they pursue their pick-up basketball summer tour across Parisian playgrounds. The sun was out, the casting was super diverse, women of all backgrounds, ages, and even men playing together or against each other. The sight was incredible, and the vibe reminded me of our doinitinthepark runs in NYC. The founders & .gueugnon got together with a purpose in mind: to change the perception of women’s basketball by expanding its visibility and presence across every borough. It’s also about empowering women to play in and occupy public spaces, break down established patterns, and encourage coed basketball. I had fun capturing them despite using expired film rolls… ain’t my best photos, but the story is bigger than a sharp image, it’s about changing culture, so you know what to do. Support .

Heart of the City: An Ode to NYC Basketball

Summer 2023 was special as I got to showcase a curated selection of my NYC basketball archives in the very headquarters of Parks & Recreation : The Arsenal. A surreal opportunity as I spent so many years capturing these playgrounds, the iconic leaf, the people using these spaces...the energy and authenticity of it all I gathered on the walls of their art gallery in Central Park. The archives exhibited were shot on film for the most part between 2004 and 2020, across multiple journeys, neighborhoods, communities, and sometimes empty spaces. NYC’s always been the foundation of my work, it shaped my perspective on playground basketball culture, its aesthetics, history and meaning and trully I was honored to share these works in such a prestigious location.

In addition, I invited RimandtheRock to manufacture a limited edition replica hoop inspired by my photo of Goat Park shot in 2007 - a playground which significance don’t need no explanation.

The 3 months-long felt even more special thanks to meaningful partnerships with NYC Parks, the National Basketball Players Association and Common Practice.

Doin’ It In the Park: pick-up basketball, NYC

My relationship with NYC basketball deepened in the summer of 2010 as I embarked on a feature documentary project with my pal . We had no script, no production plan or backing, just passion and a vision. I bought a shiny single-speed bike and upgraded my video setup with new lenses and audio equipment. The goal was to keep everything portable and flexible enough to navigate boulevards, streets, and neighborhoods.

Bicycles, backpacks, and a ball - we had everything needed to explore the city game, to play, film, interview, and investigate NY’s history and love affair with basketball. From Manhattan to Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island, we journeyed to 180 playgrounds and communities and interviewed 60 players. Playground legends, NBA champs, fierce women, inspiring old timers, inmates, and hard-of-hearing players - an entire casting of true New Yorkers reunited to illustrate the social impact and importance of pick-up basketball in NYC.

While our independent film had a limited run on in the USA and Japan, and on Sundance Channel and the real reward for us was to make it available online in 12 languages for the very people this film was made for, the world’s basketball community. Today, as the are celebrating their 3rd NBA championship, our film gets even more relevant for anybody who wants to understand the passion, fandom, and craze for the city game!

Heart & Soul of New York City

Is there a better time to celebrate NYC basketball?
While I’m not a New Yorker, the city has shaped my perspective and craft.
It all started in the early 90s through my passion for basketball and skateboarding, flipping through magazines or playing VHS tapes - NYC was our focal point. It’s only in 2004 that everything became real, a photo published in Bounce magazine thanks to Bobbito Garcia, and my first journey in Harlem to meet, play twenty-one, and explore summerball from uptown to Bed-Stuy.

The fantasy turned into reality, and NY’s asphalt called me almost every summer as I ventured out within the sublayers of the city game. 2009 marked a turning point as I bought a Canon 5D Mark II and spent a full summer on the sidelines of Together We Chill (still the best tournament name to this day), Lower Manhattan Classic, Tri-State Classic, West 4th, and others. I traveled to places where no tourists would go, a young white dude with a thick French accent, but dedicated to living my playground dream.

The film was released in 2010 and became an instant classic thanks to the talent of legendary artists and , and a track that perfectly crystallized the energy of the city that truly never sleeps. Sharing this film again isn’t about nostalgia, but as the Knicks made history, I believe it’s important to celebrate and honor the city game. Playground basketball is the DNA of New York, it’s about history, urban planning, creativity, community, a combination of unique parameters that I tried to articulate through my work these past two decades through this film, exhibitions, and a documentary like .

Basketball is New York.

Honored to be part of the lineup at GAME! Basketball and Contemporary, on view at Great Park Gallery in Irvine, California. The exhibition sits at the intersection of basketball and art, two things that, when done right, build the same thing: community. It anchors around the resurfacing of the Great Park’s four courts, featuring original work by California artist Katy Ann Gilmore. It brings together a selection of contemporary artists from the book Common Practice: Basketball and Contemporary Art alongside a survey of Project Backboard’s court renovations, domestic and international.

The show also marks ten years of Project Backboard. A decade. I started collaborating with them in 2014, when they used photographs from Blacktop Memento on two backboards at Lester Community Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Courts as canvases. Community spaces as galleries. That was the idea then, and it still is.
Today, prints from that same series hang on the walls alongside the work of artists, volunteers, and friends who poured themselves into this non-profit and into basketball’s culture. Proud to be in that room.

Estructuras de alegría.
Unlike most places with single poles holding backboards, Mexico showcases brutalist concrete structures rising from the ground. Deeply rooted in local architecture, these robust hoops become battlefields for pick-up basketball warriors under the watchful eye of Huitzilopochtli, the sun king.
