I don't just take photos of the places where whisky, gin, absinthe, sake, eau-de-vie etc. is made: sometimes I take pictures of the places where all these drinks (and more) and consumed! One favourite is the Sous les Cerisiers restaurant in Paris: not only is the food great, they also have a fantastic selection of sake and really know their stuff!

The Samalens distillery in Armagnac is not the most aesthetically pleasing, but they are innovative (they launched the Single de Samalens range of 8, 12 and 15 YO armagnacs inspired by single malts) and enthusiastic. They also have both pot stills (don't dare call them charentais!) and column stills.

Whilst Monkey 47 Gin tells people that it is produced at the "Black Forest Distillery," the real name of the distillery is Stählemuhle. As well as this fantastic gin, the master distiller, Christoph Keller, also makes excellent eau-de-vie, geist and absinthe. All well-worth tracking down.

Kilchoman, Islay's "Farm Distillery" is certainly remote and, although not quite as small as certain eau-de-vie or even armagnac distilleries, it's reduced scale makes it a great place to visit.

One of my first trips abroad with Whisky Magazine & Fine Spirits was to Italy, to the Capovilla distillery just outside of Bassano del Grappa. Well known for his excellent grappe and fruit brandies, Gianni Capovilla also produces rum on the French island of Marie-Galante.

L'Encantada is a small, independent bottler of armagnac. They buy directly from producers in the region and sell under their own label - but always giving the name of the domaine.

The Matter-Luginbühl distillery is run by Oliver Matter and his wife Nicole near Kallnach in Switzerland. They are famous for producing not only their own line of absinthes, eaux-de-vie and liqueurs, but also Mansinthe Absinthe and the Tempus Fugit line of bitters, creams and liqueurs.
