Field marshall Montgomery sanctioned six deep level command bunkers to be constructed during ww2 as southern underground headquarters . To this day we know of four of their locations but the last two still evade us . The bunkers would have been used for planning major missions during the conflict although Monty probably never used them himself as he hated underground bunkers . Slowly but surely the ceiling and walls are starting to buckle under the pressure of thousands of tonnes of chalk above and in the last 5 years since my first visit here I can definatley see differences .

This German bunker was built to protect a few thousand civilians from air raids during the second world war . Known as a lufftshutz bunker it had two levels with two main entrances and one emergency escape shaft going around 30 meters up a spiral staircase . The upper level of the bunker was where the plant room was located as well as small rooms for maintenance men . Once down the illuminating staircase the main bunker where the civilians waited patiently is located . Two long tunnels around 300m long and 7m wide with three or four small interesting tunnels connecting them . A third tunnel leads to the emergency escape . Whoever opened this bunker during the siege of the city went in trigger happy . Bullet holes can be seen with rusting bullets still embedded in the entrance stairs and halls .

German ww2 troop shelters were built underneath gun battery's for troops to rest and store ammunition aswell as other things . On this particular site there were four of these tunnel systems but only two were accessible. Both of the ones were got inside were slightly different with features worth seeing in both . A simple design of two access tunnels leading into a central bunker with guard rooms each end and larger rooms in the middle . Each had its own escape shaft which led up to a concrete filled machine gun pit above with the ladders also removed for safety. Some nice blast doors remain inside with bullet holes in and loads of broken beer bottles from 1933 which is strange as thats well before ww2 . Olight UK
