POP was saddened to hear of the sudden death on the 25th August of Dan Carroll from Australia and formerly Manchester, Dan was married to Ballynease resident Claire (née Quinn). Claire and Dan did a trip of back packing around Australia and finally got married 2008, they lived in Manchester where they had their son Ethan, after a short time they decided to move to Australia (14 yrs ago) where they had their daughter Caoimhe.
I would like to pass on my sincere sympathies to his wife Claire, his son Ethan, his daughter Caoimhe and the entire Quinn & Carroll families, and all Dan's friends in Australia / Ireland & England at this sad time.

I take you back 60 years to 1966, to the end of an era when a school founded by the Mercer's company of London, Lislea Primary school closed it's doors. After 114 years of provided educational facilities in the local district as the children moved to the County primary school in Kilrea. In the middle we see Mrs. Edna Houston the last Principal of Lislea school with on the left Mrs. Mary Killough & Mrs. Ray Alexander who both worked in the kitchen. Mrs. Houston took up a teaching position in Kilrea and Mrs. Killough is the new head Cook in Kilrea and Mrs. Alexander would also join them in the Kilrea school.

POP remembers Maria Kearney (née Colwell) late of Ballyscullion Road, Bellaghy and formerly Terenure, Dublin, who passed away on this date 2 years ago (2024).Maria was a lovely kind, trustworthy lady who went about with very little fuss and was held in high regard by all her neighbors. You would have met Maria walking from her home every morning to Graham's for her Irish News and on Sundays for her Sunday independent until recent years when she couldn’t. Maria loved her Saturday shopping trips to Mary Jane's (now Dresser 46)and she always bought herself something. Maria's late husband James was brought up in Lisnahunshin and he met Maria when she had come to lived for a time with her cousins in the Largy Anthony & Josephine Graham.
POP has Maria's sisters-in-law Teresa, Ann & Nan, her Nieces & Nephews, her Neighbour's and the entire Kearney & Colwell families in our thoughts and prayers today. We also have Maria's late husband James Kearney and her late siblings Paddy, Foncie, Leo, Tom and Tess in our prayers too.

Today sees the start of the 2026 National Ploughing Championships at Screggan, Tullamore, County Offaly, from Tues' 15th till Thurs' 17th Sept'. When up to 80,000 people are expected to attend the opening day, along with farmers, the ploughing community and many traders.
Here we see two Greenlough men who both sadly passed away since this photo was taken, on the left Don Scullin from Smithtowns Cross and on the right Eamon (Mickey) Birt , who attended the Championships many years back. I would like to thank George Stewart for sharing the photo with POP.

We go back to 1969 with this photo and the view of The Monastery farmyard and surrounding fields, again in colour to give us a better look at how things looked back then. Back then the fields on the other side of the Ballymena road had large trees in the hedgerow, which was taken away in the early 70s and replace in the 90s with a thorn hedge. We see the old hen houses that once stood as you entered the farmyard and all the farm out buildings back then.

I take you back 60 years to 1966 and a photo taken on the shores of Lough Neagh, when they were talking about the young not being interested in the fishing. We see Alex Johnston with his sons Paul & Richard who's another fisherman in their boat at Portlee West, Toomebridge, with their dog. Alex who was a fisherman all his life, felt there was no future in the fishing industry, as the young men where taking up employment in other trades and the girls were going to the local factories.

POP would like to congratulate Laurance O'Kane on celebrating 40 years in business, Laurance is married to former Glenone resident Maura (nee McCann), and demolished and rebuilt McCann's filling station. Laurance and the staff of O’Kanes Pharmacy have serve the Draperstown community and surrounding district for 40 years.
POP wishes Laurance and all his staff the very beat in the years to come !!
