This awesome place far up north was constructed around 1840 and decommissioned in 1970. It is believed to be approximately 350 feet deep. The pipes you can see were used to create and transport compressed air to power the miners machinery. Some people have even abseiled down it — would you?

Something about still water amazes me. This water rests undisturbed at the bottom of a main haulage adit, deep within a well-known slate mine in Wales.
In complete darkness, it is left alone and sustains its own tiny ecosystem, thriving of off the bacteria and lack of oxygen that inhabits this forgotten location.
