Just back from twitching the Long-tailed Shrike at Eastleach Martin in Gloucestershire. Didn’t get close enough views for decent photos, but what a stunner 🙂

Entering a quiet spell at work so I decided to go for the Western Reef Heron on Wednesday 12th June (first for Britain). Watched the target bird at Caernarfon during the evening and then in the heavy wind/rain the following morning in Foryd Bay. Chough (4+), Puffin (1), Guillemot (1000+), Razorbill (1000+), Raven (1), etc. were at South Stack and a Black Guillemot was the best bird at Cemlyn Bay. The weather was against me for the Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly that I was hoping to see at Cors Bodeilio the following morning, but I did get to see my first Fly Orchid. 65 different species in total.

Stopped off at a few locations during my visit to see family in Scotland with at least 75 different species seen during journey time, '26th to 29th May'. Garganey (1), Ruff (1), American Black Tern (1), Little Gull (1), Hooded Crow (1), Ring Ouzel (2), Mountain Hare (2+), large raptor (possible Golden Eagle), Osprey (3) and Curlew Sandpiper (1) being the best birds seen.

Managed to get out a little bit more since my last post with a nice variety of birds being seen. Also my first butterflies of the year, which included two Holly Blues at Etherley Moor and another two in Etherley Dene. Just nice to be out.

Helping with the renovation of my son’s new house over the past few weeks since my last post, so sort of restricted to the odd walk out on patch. Redpolls, Siskin & Greenfinch have been seen on feeders 2-3 doors along from son’s house in Bishop Auckland. Egyptian Goose, Whooper Swan & Mandarin at Low Barns. Mandarin at the Batts. My first ChiffChaff of the year was heard/seen 1-2 weeks ago in Etherley Dene and have become increasingly audable since. Today (21st), there were 5-6 calling at Low Barns.

Steady start to the year with Great Northern Diver, Black-throated Diver, Taiga Bean Goose, Russian White-fronted Goose, Water Pipit & Crossbill being the best birds seen. Also nice to see Red Squirrel.

31/12/2025

Ended 2025 with a twitch to Ludham Bridge in Norfolk for a Black-winged Kite (29th December), which was seen soon after sunrise and then again later in the morning (unfortunately didn't come close enough for photo's, but was nice to see). Other birds of interest at Ludham bridge included Common Crane (4+), Cattle Egret (6), Bewick's Swan (4), Whooper Swan (10+), Bearded Tit (5+), White-fronted Goose (10+ with 50+ Greylags), Red Kite (1) and Pink-footed Goose (150+ over). Eastern Black Redstart (1) showed very well at Sheringham. Brent Goose (100+) were seen whist driving to Cley Spy to check tripods out. A single Glossy Ibis was at Warham Greens near Wells before the rain started.

A selection of birds during the 2-3 months before the twitch to Ludham included Siberian Stonechat at Hawthorne Dene, American Wigeon at Bishop Middleham, Caspian Gull at Haverton, Waxwing at Port Clarence, Smew at Hurworth Burn (1 drake) & Lesser Redpoll at Escomb.
