📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUE #2 — USING THE FOREGROUND 🌿

One of the techniques I often use when photographing dogs is using the foreground to add depth to the image.

Instead of having a completely clear view of the dog, I'll sometimes position myself behind grass, flowers, leaves or other parts of the environment.

This can help create a more natural-looking photograph and make the viewer feel like they're looking into the scene rather than just looking at the dog.

Here are a few examples from my shoots. 🐾📸

🐇 A little brown rabbit from one of my recent outings 🌿📸

I came across this one sitting amongst the wildflowers, giving me a great opportunity to capture it surrounded by its natural environment.

I really liked how the flowers and vegetation frame the rabbit in this shot. 🌼

📸 THE TECHNIQUES BEHIND MY PHOTOGRAPHS 🐾

When you see the finished photograph, it can be easy to think it's simply a case of pointing the camera at a dog and pressing the shutter.

But there are actually lots of different techniques I use during a photoshoot to create the final image.

Over the next few days, I'm going to be sharing some of the techniques I use when photographing dogs, along with examples from my own shoots.

From changing my angle and getting down to the dog's eye level, to using the foreground, surroundings and natural light — small changes can make a big difference to the final photograph.

So, let's start with one of my favourites...

📸 TECHNIQUE #1 — GETTING LOW

Getting down to the dog's level can completely change the perspective of an image.

Rather than photographing from standing height, I'll often get as low as possible and shoot from their eye level. This can make the photograph feel more immersive and put the viewer closer to the dog's world.

Here are a few examples from my own photography. 🐶📸

🦊📸 I HAVE A NEW WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY PAGE! 🐦🌿

If you’ve followed my photography for a while, you’ll know that alongside photographing pets, I’ve always had a huge passion for wildlife.

So I’ve decided to create a separate page dedicated to my wildlife photography! 🦊🦅🦌

I’ll still be posting all my pet photography here as usual, but I’ll now be sharing my wildlife work over on the new page too.

There’ll be everything from birds and mammals to landscapes, behind-the-scenes photography and some of the wildlife I come across while out with my camera. 📷🌲

The two pages will also be linked, so you can easily find both sides of my photography.

👉 Go and give my new wildlife page at

Thank you to everyone who has supported my photography so far — it genuinely means a lot! ❤️

📸 WELCOME TO DEXTER WELLS PHOTOGRAPHY 🐾
Hi, I’m Dexter — a 14 year old pet photographer based in Chichester, West Sussex. I specialise in natural, outdoor photography that captures your pet’s personality and the moments you’ll want to remember.
Over the past few months, I’ve been building my portfolio and photographing some amazing dogs and pets across the local area. Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far!

🐶 HOW MY SHOOTS WORK
I’ve recently changed the way I offer my photography.
The photoshoot itself is completely FREE. There’s no upfront session fee, so you can simply book a shoot and enjoy the experience with your pet.
After the shoot, I’ll carefully select and professionally edit the best photographs from your session. You’ll then be able to view your finished images online and choose the ones you love.

💻 DIGITAL PHOTOS ARE £5 EACH
These are high-resolution digital files only — perfect for keeping, sharing online, or printing yourself.
This means you only pay for the images you actually want, rather than paying a large fee before you’ve even seen the results.

📷 THE PROCESS IS SIMPLE:
Get in touch and book your shoot
Enjoy a relaxed photoshoot with your pet
View your professionally edited images online and choose and purchase your favourite digital images.

If you’re interested in booking a shoot, have any questions, or simply want to find out more, send me a message! 🐾

📸 THE EDITING BEHIND THE PHOTO

Most people don't realise it at first, but a huge part of a photographer's job happens after the photoshoot.

Taking the photograph is only the beginning. Once I'm home, I go through the images, choose the strongest shots and carefully edit them to bring out the best in each photograph.

The before-and-after examples below show just how much difference editing can make. From adjusting exposure and colour to bringing out detail, improving contrast and creating a natural-looking final image, there's a lot that goes into turning the original camera file into the finished photograph. 📷

My aim isn't to completely change how your pet looks — it's to enhance what was already there and create an image that feels natural, authentic and timeless.

Every pet and every photograph is different, so I edit each image individually rather than simply applying the same settings to everything.

And most importantly, your photos are yours. If there's something about an edit that you don't like, just let me know. I'd be more than happy to make adjustments and work with you to get the final image looking the way you want it.

A finished photograph might look simple when you see it, but there's often a lot more work behind it than you might expect. 🐾
and these shoots have really helped my techniques.

Do you consider this cheating?

🐾 Meet Milo! 🖤

I had such a lovely time photographing Milo during his recent shoot. He was full of personality and curiosity, and I loved capturing him exploring his surroundings and taking in everything around him!

A huge thank you to Milo's owner for giving me the opportunity to photograph such a wonderful dog and for supporting me as I continue to build my portfolio. Every photoshoot gives me the chance to learn, improve, and experiment with different ways of capturing each pet's individual personality.

I'm really grateful to everyone who has trusted me with their pets so far. 📸

Here are a few of my favourite photos from a range of shoots, showcasing some of the different styles and techniques I use when photographing pets. From capturing natural movement and personality to working with different lighting, backgrounds and compositions, every shoot gives me the opportunity to try something a little different.

I’m always looking to develop my photography and build a varied portfolio, so I hope you enjoy seeing some of these favourites! 📷✨
