Found these bold little guys standing proud in Kingley Vale, West Sussex 🍂 – the Scarletina Bolete (Neoboletus luridiformis). Easily recognised by their deep red stems and dark caps, they’re a classic sign that autumn is setting in.

Not one to mess with unless you know your fungi – they stain blue when cut and, while edible when cooked, can be toxic raw. Another reminder that the woods are full of both beauty and mystery.

Shot low to the forest floor to catch that warrior stance 💪🍄

Blue Tit in action. A familiar sight in Sussex gardens and woodlands, these little acrobats are always on the move. Known for their agility, they’ll dart between feeders, trees, and hedgerows with precision. A reminder that even in the everyday countryside, there’s always wildlife worth capturing.

Out in the woods at Kingley Vale, West Sussex, I came across this tight cluster of Mycena inclinata, better known as the Clustered Bonnet.

These fungi are saprotrophic — breaking down fallen wood and recycling nutrients back into the soil. They’re a key part of the forest ecosystem, thriving on decay to keep the woodland alive. Often overlooked, but without them, the cycle of the forest would stall.

Sometimes the best shots aren’t the wide views, but getting down low to see the details most people walk straight past.
