CP Photography

CP Photography Photography of all sorts This is who I am. Everyone has a story to tell and it is my story that makes me the photographer I am today. This is my story.

It’s what makes me passionate about capturing precious moments on camera. It’s what gives me goose bumps when I find that perfect shot. And it’s what makes me appreciate being able to share this special talent with other people. Being a photographer was always a dream of mine, but for many years it came second to my work as a teacher. I loved my job. Building relationships with children and watchi

ng them grow was what life was all about. But I always wanted a child of my own. I married Richard on New Year’s Day 2005. There were candles and fairylights, a children’s choir and a nineteen piece band. It was perfect. Shortly afterwards, I was told by doctors I had “less than a one percent chance of ever conceiving a child”. My world fell apart. But, four years and quite a battle later, a miracle happened. We named our miracle Arthur. It is Arthur who drove me to realise my dream of becoming a photographer. Taking photographs of my baby came as a natural part of motherhood to me. I wanted to capture every tiny bit of him and save it forever. Those newborn days and early photographs of tiny fingers and toes. Later, photographs of him splashing in puddles and tasting his first icecream. I couldn’t help it – I had to take photographs. All the time. So, having become slightly obsessed with telling Arthur's story, I decided to start telling the stories of others. I am now in the hugely privileged position of being able to share the most special day of many couples’ lives, as they entrust me with their wedding photography. It isn’t often that I don’t feel real emotion as I stand and sing a hymn or peep out from behind a tree to capture a moment where two people are just in their own world. Capturing that moment, where nothing else matters but those two people in that photograph… well, that’s what it’s all about. My job is more than just a job for me. It’s something I have to do. It’s something I do every day of my life, whether I’m being paid for it or not. This is why I’m passionate about photography. This is why I would be honoured to tell your story.

Travelling by Lotus sleeper train from Hanoi to Hue was a big highlight for us. This was proper adventuring! Being rocked to sleep by the movement of the chugging train to the sound of Max Richter’s ‘On the Nature of Daylight’ and waking at 5am to peep through the curtain and watch the sun rise over the rice fields _ it doesn’t get much better than that...

Next stop...Ninh Binh, also known as Ha Long Bay on land, where daily life unfolds between rivers, rice fields and dramatic limestone karsts. Photographs just don’t do it justice (this applies to the whole country in fact) but our few days there gave us a sense of peace and awe of just how beautiful God’s creation is. Climbing up the hundreds of steps of Dragon Mountain you can’t prepare yourself for the breathtaking view from the top. The winding river cutting through rice fields with little boats drifting below.

The river is at the heart of life in Tam Coc. Boat rowers, often women, steer using their feet - a beautiful thing to watch. Despite the many tourists there is a real sense of peace and calm on the river as goods are transported, buffalo graze, the occasional cone hat appears from the middle of a rice field and goats snooze on shady, rocky mountain sides.

Arthur and I ventured out early one morning to catch a glimpse of local people setting about their daily routines. Women washing clothes in the river and others preparing their boats for a busy day ahead. Such a gift to just sit quietly and observe.

Meandering along the river was a real highlight of our trip as we took in the beauty of this place, our happy rower paddling us through rice fields and echoing caves with more steps to panoramic views.

Ha Long Bay
The breathtaking natural wonder of North Vietnam. This extraordinary archipelago of nearly 2000 limestone karsts is genuinely awe inspiring. Its been the cradle of civilisation There is archeological evidence that points to fishing settlements that go back 18,000 years. After that it became a natural stronghold, a strategic naval base to repel invaders. Its threaded through the cultural memory of Vietnam in the poetry, songs and even in the royal records of ancient dynasties. So when you sail through these islands, you’re not just sailing through this beautiful awe inspiring landscape, you’re sailing through a place of myths and legend.

According to Vietnamese legend, Ha Long Bay was formed when the Jade Emperor sent a Mother Dragon and her children to help the Vietnamese fight northern invaders. The dragons spat out jewels and jade, which turned into the thousands of limestone islands and islets, forming a defensive barrier that destroyed enemy ships. After the victory, the Mother Dragon descended in this spot, known as “Ha Long” (Descending Dragon), while her children stayed at “Bai Tu Long”.

Arthur and I spent three days absorbing this incredible wonder of our world. We kayaked, cycled at Cat Ba Island and visited a pearl village. We learnt so much here and even though the sun didn’t shine for us, its beauty was just as breathtaking and maybe almost more mystical in the misty cloud and shades of grey.
