How long do you wait for a photograph?

Sometimes I find the composition first and then wait for people to make it work.

I’ll stay for a while, watching people enter and leave the frame, waiting for everything to fall into place. Other times I probably give up far too quickly.

I think patience is one of the more underrated parts of street photography.

Do you wait for a scene to come together, or are you more instinctive and keep moving?

Shadows.

When the sun gets low in Geneva, the city starts to change. Long shadows stretch across the streets, familiar shapes become something else, and occasionally the light catches the edge of a figure with just enough rim light to separate them from the darkness.

I often go out with something in mind to photograph. On these days it was simply shadows. Once you start looking for them, they seem to be everywhere.

Geneva in late summer, when the sun is still high enough to make you look for a little shelter.

I photographed the first parasol almost by accident. After that, I started noticing them everywhere. Different streets, different people, the same small patch of portable shade.

Sometimes one detail is enough to give you something to follow.

A few frames from a recent afternoon photographing Manon.

We moved between portraits, quieter moments and whatever the location gave us, with Val helping shape things as creative director behind the scenes.

Shot in black and white, keeping things loose and letting the session develop as we went.

Leica Akademie workshop, Geneva.

Friday evening with Smita D , exploring the city with a camera and making the most of that wonderful late summer light.

We spent the evening looking at light, shadows, reflections and, probably most importantly, learning to anticipate when all those little elements on the street might come together.

The sun was getting lower as we walked towards the lake, throwing these enormous shadows across the old cobbles. Exactly the sort of light that makes you want to stay out just a little longer.

A very enjoyable evening of photography in Geneva.

One evening in Geneva.

I went out looking for the last of the evening light.

When the sun gets low, Geneva changes. Shadows stretch across the streets, people become silhouettes and even familiar places start to look a little different.

I followed that light through the city and down towards the lake, looking for the small moments happening within it.

A man sitting in the shadows. People heading home. Swans catching the last of the sun. A restaurant preparing for the evening.

Nothing complicated. Just one evening, one idea, and seeing where it took me.

Apparently it’s International Dog Day.

Which seems as good an excuse as any to hand over the feed to the dogs I’ve met along the way. 🐕

Some posed.

Some ignored me.

Some appeared to be in charge of the entire situation.

And one or two were moving considerably faster than my focusing.

All photographed in black and white, in the street, at home and wherever our paths happened to cross.

I’ve always thought dogs make wonderful subjects. There’s no performance for the camera. No self-consciousness. Just curiosity, suspicion, excitement… or complete indifference.

Trying to see the street without photographing the street.

Yesterday I went out with a 90mm and a simple idea: stop looking for scenes and start looking for fragments.

Reflections.
Obstructions.
Hard light.
People appearing in the wrong places.

The first photograph was probably my favourite.

I was concentrating on the swan and the layers of geometry in front of it. I didn’t even notice the two women tucked into the bottom of the frame until afterwards.

Sometimes the photograph knows more than the photographer.

One camera. One roll.

A Leica M6 loaded with Ilford HP5 Plus and a walk through Geneva.

A fountain.
Two people crossing the light.
A motorbike waiting at the junction.
An American car in an unlikely corner.
A wet dog.
An empty café.

Nothing connected them at the time.

But that’s one of the things I enjoy about shooting film. You don’t really know what you’ve collected until the roll comes back.

Thirty-six small observations from a day that would otherwise have disappeared.

Most of city life happens while nothing is happening.

Waiting for someone.
Crossing a street.
Talking to a friend.
Getting distracted.
Laughing at something nobody else noticed.

These are the moments I keep coming back to with a camera.

Nothing staged.
Nothing particularly important.

Just people briefly disappearing into their own little worlds.
