Whitby's Whale Bones: A Monument to a Bloody Past

Perched on West Cliff, the massive whale jawbones overlook the North Sea — a stark reminder of Whitby's brutal whaling history. First erected in 1853 to honor the town’s whaling legacy, the original bones came from a bowhead whale brought back by Whitby whalers. After weathering decades of harsh coastal winds, they were replaced in 1963 with bones from Norwegian whalers — and again in 2003 with a set donated by Alaskan Inuit hunters. A chilling yet powerful tribute to Whitby’s whaling heyday. 🌊🦴
